House-training is a must when you own a dog.
House-training a dog takes consistency and patience. It is best to house-train dogs when they are puppies, but dogs can be housebroken no matter what their age. When done correctly, house-training can be completed within a few days. The key is consistency, so you may want to plan to take some time off work so that you can devote uninterrupted time to potty training. Remember that praise and rewards work better than yelling and consequences.
Instructions
1. Locate the area where you want your dog to go to the bathroom. Usually outside is best, but you could also choose to paper train your dog in a specific location inside your house.
2. Supervise your dog constantly. When you notice your dog turning in circles, squatting or starting to use the bathroom in your house, immediately say, "No. Outside," and take your dog out. Continue doing this until your dog learns to signal you by standing near the door to go outside. Be sure to take it out right away when it does this.
3. Praise and pet your dog every time it potties outside. Dogs want to please you and will respond to this praise.
