History
The very idea of Deseret Industries was initiated by a letter that the First Presidency--the LDS governing body--sent to the LDS congregation of Utah's Salt Lake Valley dated August 11, 1938. It requested contributions of materials that could be sold to needy church members at a minimum cost.
Composition
Deseret Industries in Sacramento is composed of three related services: People can be trained for employment in industries within the Sacramento community; those in need can buy inexpensive merchandise from the shop; and people can donate merchandise to the store for sale.
Location
Apart from Sacramento, Deseret Industries stores can be found elsewhere in California, as well as six other states: Utah, California, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.
Impact
Every community with a large LDS population in the western United States has at least one Deseret Industries store serving it. Also, Deseret Industries job placement almost tripled during the 1980s.
