Top Animal Careers

If you are thinking about translating your love of animals into a career, you are in luck. There are many opportunities to work with animals in a variety of ways. Some require more education than others with special licensing, but if you love animals, there is a place for you to develop a future.


Animal Medicine


When most people think about a career with animals, they think about working in a veterinarian clinic. There are many areas of medical expertise that may be enticing to you, as a veterinarian or a technician. You may work with small animals, large animals or exotic pets. Large animals are primarily farm livestock. You could also work in wildlife rehabilitation, helping injured animals get healthy and released back into the wild. This area is one of the highest-paying career sectors for animal lovers.


Conservationist


Many people find fulfilling careers in the care and conservation of animals in the wild. You may become a biologist or ecologist, researching and studying animal migrations and how human populations affect wildlife populations. You may decide that your passions are best suited for educating others through school programs and ranger programs. Being a ranger is very fulfilling, as you are able to educate and protect wildlife at the same time.


Pets


If working with pets is more your speed, you have many options here as well. You can work with pet rescues through the national or local Humane Society and other organizations helping save animals and find them healthy homes. There are many pet services such as dog walking, pet sitting and grooming. You may decide to work in a brick-and-mortar facility or do a mobile service.


Zoo Staff


A zoo needs many people in order to operate safely and effectively. In a zoo, there are many positions that can be fulfilling and utilize your various skills. From director to keepers, each person helps keep the life of the zoo residents healthy and positive. In the administrative areas there are the director, grant writers and foundation employees who seek the capital to take care of the zoo animals. Working directly with the animals are the habitat specialists, animal researchers and zookeepers.


Animal Trainers


Animal training can be fun and rewarding if you have the patience to spend long hours trying to communicate in "animal speak." Behavior modification of animals can be enjoyable but trying on the nerves. Occupations range from animal trainers in the entertainment industry, to athletic training and work animals. If you love large animals, being a horse trainer is thrilling. Many dogs are used as work dogs on farms, in law enforcement, and for search and rescue, as well as to assist the disabled. Training these animals not only helps provide a companion, but also a means of independence.
