Become An Adoption Consultant

Adoption consultants or adoption facilitators help families through the adoption process. They usually start by counseling families thinking about adopting, helping them decide whether it's a good decision for their family. Then, the adoption consultant helps the family come up with a plan for the type of child they want, helps with paperwork and the other complexities involved with adopting a child. 1. Check with the laws in your state. Each state will have different requirements and different certifications they will require for you to become a licensed adoption consultant. While there are many businesses for adoption consultants, unless you are licensed, it is illegal in most states to run an unlicensed adoption consultant or an adoption facilitation business. In addition, most often, the illegal businesses call themselves adoption facilitators.


2. Get your Bachelors from a good college in psychology, social work or counseling. Concentrate your studies on marriage and family therapy, if possible. These degrees will prepare you better than others for becoming an adoption consultant.


3. Consider getting your Masters in social work or psychology or counseling. A Master's will prepare you even better than a Bachelor's to become an adoption consultant, and many states require a Master's for licensing as an adoption consultant.


4. Plan on working with various adoption agencies before becoming an adoption consultant, so you can learn as much as possible about adoption.
