Facts About Teddy Bear Dogs

Teddy bears are small, fluffy mixed-breed dogs. They are a designer breed and usually bred for their appearance. While very cute and cuddly, their price and temperament may not be the right fit for everyone.

Breeding

Teddy bear dogs are not purebreds, but rather a combination of two or three breeds. The breeds used to create a teddy bear are shi tzus, toy poodles and bichon frises.

Size

These dogs are very small and usually only weigh 7 to 9 pounds.

Appearance

The name teddy bear comes from the fact that these dogs are fluffy and resemble teddy bears; they usually have brown or black coats.

Health Issues

Since these dogs are not purebreds, it can be difficult to determine what health problems may arise down the road. Small dogs are more prone to problems with their eyes and ears, and can become bloated or overweight if not properly fed.

Price

Teddy bear dogs are considered a designer breed, so the price tag may reflect that. Prices can range from $950 to $1,750, depending on the breeder.

Behavior

These dogs are very energetic and can be difficult to house train. Watch them carefully around children, as they may nip.
