Retrieve Old Traffic Tickets

If you're trying to retrieve information from an old traffic citation, contact the government office where you received the ticket.

Retrieving the details of an old traffic ticket requires a bit of due diligence. Depending on which state you live in, traffic ticket information --- both new and old --- may be available online. You can find out if your ticket information is online by visiting your city's, county's or state's website; search for "traffic citations" and input all of the necessary information. Municipalities, however, don't list old traffic citations online, so you need to retrieve it the old-fashioned way.

Instructions

1. Determine where you may have received a traffic citation. If it was within a city's limits, you need to contact that city's government; if it was outside of city limits but not on a state highway or interstate, contact that county's government. If it was on a state highway or interstate, contact the state's government. Ascertain the contact information for the appropriate government.

2. Gather together all information that you may need to retrieve your ticket. This includes the driver's license state and number that you had at the time of the citation, your car's license plate number and your full name.

3. Call the number for the appropriate governmental department.

4. Indicate to the operator that you're attempting to retrieve information for an old traffic ticket. You may want to inform him how old the ticket may be.

5. Provide all necessary information to the operator. If he's not able to find the ticket, you may have received the ticket by the county or the state, so check with the surrounding city, county and state governments.
