Write A Volunteer Resume

Write a Volunteer Resume

Volunteering is an excellent and worthwhile way to spend your free time. Whether you are retired and looking for something to fill your time or trying to build experience for your resume, volunteering helps people in need and makes you feel good. There are many different places to volunteer--from animal shelters to hospitals--but wherever you decide to volunteer, you will need a resume as with any paid job.

Instructions

1. Open a new document using a word-processing program. Begin by typing your name and contact information at the top, making sure your name is in capital letters and in a bold format.

2. Write a personal statement, explaining why you want to volunteer and what kind of volunteer opportunity you are seeking.

3. Write a list of your relevant skills, using bullet points. Include any computer skills, interpersonal skills, communication skills or organizational skills you may have, as well as anything you think relevant to the volunteer position you are applying for.

4. List your professional experience, highlighting any previous volunteer jobs you may have had. Include dates, locations, job titles and duties. Be brief but specific.

5. List your educational experience, being sure to include your degree or diploma title and the completion date.

6. Have two or three friends proofread your volunteer resume. Ask them to read it as if they were considering hiring you for a volunteer position and have them suggest any skills you might add, as well as mentioning any information that is not appropriate. Also have them check for spelling or grammatical errors, and ask them for comments on your formatting. Make any relevant changes, and send your volunteer resume out for consideration.
