West Virginia Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection Laws

An annual inspection is required in West Virginia on all vehicles registered in the state except those given an exemption under state law, which includes dealers in new vehicles. Automobiles are inspected by mechanics trained and licensed by West Virginia State Police.

Exceptions

A number of groups of vehicles do not require inspection, including class R house trailers and class T trailers under 2,000 pounds. Vehicles including motorcycles, trailers, semi-trailers and pole trailers that carry a temporary or permanent license plate must gain a certificate of inspection before being driven on West Virginia streets and highways.

Inspection

The West Virginia vehicle safety inspection checks the braking systems, seat belts, safety glass quality and condition, and sheet metal and frame condition. Other checks include tires and wheels, fuel systems and insurance paperwork.

Cost

West Virginia law requires vehicle inspection cost not to exceed $12.36 in 2010, which includes $11 plus sales tax for labor and $1 for the certificate. Each vehicle to be registered in West Virginia must obtain a vehicle inspection within 10 days of purchase. The inspection is the responsibility of the purchaser.
