Get A Veterinary Technician Job After School

Find a position as a veterinary technician after getting your certification

Once a veterinary technology program is completed and you receive your certification, you can start to look for employment in the field. Before looking for employment you should check with your state to make sure you have the required certification, which will vary from state to state. Call your local veterinary licensing board to make sure you have all licensing requirements before looking for a job.

Instructions

1. Volunteer at any animal clinic, farm, zoo or animal shelter in your area to get work experience with animals before graduating. Ask school counselors about internship programs, which will give you experience in the field.

2. Prepare your resume and list your veterinary technology degree, special coursework you took and your veterinary technician certification. Keep your resume to a page or two in length and make sure to use correct grammar and appropriate formatting. Be sure that all your job experience is listed. Use resume templates in Microsoft Word or similar programs to help make your resume look professional.

3. Contact your school job placement center to ask about job placement assistance either just before graduating or after graduation. Talk to your school's career counselors to find any open positions. Be sure to leave a copy of your resume with your school job placement counselor.

4. Log on to the American Veterinary Medicine Association website (see Resources). Check for job listings on this website and others like Monster, Simply Hired or Get Veterinary Technician Jobs (see Resources).

5. Apply to several job positions you find on the web, from your school or any other contact you have. Send in a job application and always accompany your application with your resume and a cover letter. The cover letter should explain why you would like to work for the company and what your objectives and expectations are. Continue to apply for veterinary technician job positions until you get called for an interview.

6. Arrive to an interview on time, dressed neatly and carry an extra copy of your resume. Explain why you entered a veterinary technology program and why you want a position in an animal clinic. When asked about your experience, focus on your volunteer services and any other experience you have working with animals.

7. Accept a job offer under the terms agreed to by both you and the contracting employer. Arrive at the specified time on the specified date to begin your new position.
