Shitzu Temperament

The shih tzu is playful and lively.

The shih tzu, also known as shitzu, displays the behavior of a young child: lovable and sociable, yet very stubborn. It gets along well with most people as long as it gets enough attention. Like all dogs each shih tzu is an individual, so these are only general guidelines to the breed. Choose a dog based on who it is individually and your experience with it.

Companionship

Shih tzus make good companion dogs. They are affectionate, attentive, energetic and responsive. The breed has a sense of entitlement, vying desperately for your attention, and it loves being spoiled. Because of the shih tzu's loyalty, it hates to be separated and will grow sick if neglected.

Toughness

The shih tzu is always alert and attentive and it is a tough breed in spite of its size---the toughest amongst all miniature breeds. According to the Official Shih Tzu Guide, the dog is known as a "little lion" in China. The shih tzu actually makes a good watch dog, as it is fond of barking and snappy when startled.

Playfulness

Energetic dogs such as the shih tzu can be extremely playful, but playful dogs can also be mischievous and feisty. If left alone, the breed can be somewhat destructive and grouchy. However, these dogs get along well with other pets and strangers and are fine as long as they have constant company.

Training

The website Breeder Retriever states that shih tzus are clever and trainable, but they are also stubborn and need a lot of patience on the part of the trainer to teach them anything. Their stubbornness, however, is balanced out by their loyalty. They will listen attentively to the trainer.

Relationships

Shih tzus can grow jealous of the attention of others, so they do not get along well with small children, toddlers and babies. But they will get along with just about anybody who's soft and sincere with them, especially if they receive constant attention. The shih tzu is less than ideal for anyone unwilling or unable to take on that responsibility.
