Breed Greyhounds

Greyhounds are incredibly athletic pets.

When you decide to breed a dog, any kind of dog, you must be dedicated and committed to the process. Breeding greyhounds takes time, money and patience. Greyhounds are an intelligent and laid backed breed of dog. They make wonderful pets or can be outstanding racers. Before you decide to breed greyhounds, make sure you know what type of dog you want to breed; pets, race dogs or show dogs. This will determine how you need to begin the breeding process.

Instructions

1. Detect any diseases in your greyhound. Before you begin the process of breeding your greyhound, make sure that it is free of disease. This means that you should not attempt to breed your dog until the age of two. Most health conditions do not appear when a dog is young, so by waiting until they are at least two, you will be able to have a thorough examination.

2. Prepare for a change in your lifestyle. Breeding your greyhound takes commitment and the decision should not be made lightly. Prepare for extra vet trips, an increase in food costs, and extra puppy care. You will need to have frequent night time check-ins with your dogs and puppies to make sure everyone is doing well.

3. Select your breeding greyhound. If you don't already have a greyhound dog to breed, you will need to make a selection. Make sure that you don't buy your dog from a pet store. You want to find a breeder that specializes in the greyhound breed. You should have no problems finding a reputable breeder within your region. Make sure you ask your potential breeder for references.

4. Check health records of your breeder. Before you buy your greyhound for breeding check all of its health records. If you are breeding your own dog, make sure its health records and vaccinations are up to date.

5. Introduce your breeding dogs. Female dogs come into heat about every six months. When a female dog is in heat, she should be with the male dog every other day. Typically, the breeding process happens organically and will not need your intervention.
