The Best Small Breed Dog For Families

If you are considering a small dog breed for your family, there are quite a few to choose from. You need a dog that is good with children, and not so small and fragile that they would be injured during play. No matter which breed you choose, select a healthy dog with a good temperament. Just because the breed standard says a dog should act a certain way, it doesn't mean they all do.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the royal dog of England. They stand approximately 12 inches high at the shoulder, and have a medium length coat that does not require much care. This dog was bred for herding, and have a strong herding instinct. They are very intelligent and protective of children, but can sometimes be bossy or nippy. This dog is best for families with children ages 6 or older. They are an overall healthy breed, with few genetic defects. Possible health concerns include seizures, degeneration of nerves in the spine, and eye problems.

Schnauzer

The Schnauzer comes in three sizes. The giant Schnauzer is a large dog and can weigh up to 75 pounds. The standard and miniature are small dogs, weighing up to 33 pounds and 17 pounds, respectively. They have a wiry coat that is normally clipped short on the body, and longer on the legs and face. Schnauzers require frequent grooming to keep their hair short. This dog's distinctive beard and long eyebrows make them instantly recognizable. The tail is usually docked at birth, and in some countries the ears are cropped. Schnauzers are intelligent dogs that are good with children, but they become bored easily. Schnauzers are a healthy breed overall, but can be prone to tumors, epilepsy, diabetes, and hypothyroidism.

Beagle

Beagles are good pets for active families. They get bored easily and need a lot of exercise, but love to take part in family activities. Beagles weigh up to 30 pounds, and have a short coat that does not require much attention. This dog is a prolific digger with a distinctive bark. You may need special fencing to confine them. Beagles should not be left alone for long periods of time, since they can become destructive if they are bored. They can also be a bit stubborn, and may require obedience training.

Pug

Pugs originated in China, where they were used as temple guard dogs. Their curly tails and squashed faces give them a distinct appearance. They are a loyal and affectionate dog that is good with small children. Pugs can weigh up to 22 pounds, and have a short, dense coat that requires brushing. They are best for families that live in temperate climates and do not want a dog that is extremely active. The pug's constricted airway can be a problem in hot climates, or when the dog is overworked or overexcited. They also snore. Pugs are prone to hip and leg disorders, certain types of tumors, seizures, and eye problems.
