Donate Canned Goods In Sacramento

You don't have to give a lot to make a big difference in someone's life.

Emergency food pantries and charity organizations in Sacramento, California, distribute food and other essential items to tens of thousands of people every month. Hunger and food insecurity is a national crisis that hits urban areas especially hard. The Sacramento Hunger Commission, the Sacramento Food Bank and many churches provide food to needful individuals and families at no cost. These organizations rely almost exclusively on donations from individuals in the community.

Instructions

1. Contact the Sacramento Hunger Commission, the Sacramento Food Bank or local churches for information about donations. Write down the location to drop canned food donations. Note the times when donations are accepted.

2. Request a "wish list" from the organization with which you plan to donate canned goods. Organize a canned goods collection drive or purchase healthy canned goods from the "wish list." Donate healthy foods such as green beans, peas, corn, brown beans, canned juices, fruits such as peaches and pears, apple sauce and soups. Organize canned goods by type.

3. Check expiration dates on foods canned in glass containers with a sealed lid. Check the lids to make sure the seals are not damaged. Gently press on the center of the lid to verify the seal is intact.

4. Ask for a receipt for the value of your donation if you purchase canned goods. Save the receipt for tax purposes. Deduct the value of your charitable donation from your taxes if you plan to itemize deductions on your tax return.
