The bichon is a small dog with a terrific personality. Bichons do not shed, but they do need daily grooming to keep their coats beautiful and fluffy. They are loving, playful and loyal. They make excellent companions for both humans and other small dogs. Sadly, bichons, just like other dogs, are abandoned in shelters throughout Delaware and surrounding states. Dogs in shelters need to be rescued.
Instructions
1. Foster a bichon or bichon mix for Delaware Valley Bichon Rescue. This is a wonderful opportunity to save lives. Rescue groups rely upon foster homes to care for dogs waiting for new homes. A foster home provides a safe, loving environment. The rescue group takes care of paying veterinarian bills and screening adopters. Delaware Valley Bichon Rescue takes in dogs from Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey and needs foster homes in Delaware.
2. Foster a bichon or bichon mix for a Delaware-based all-breed dog rescue group. All-breed dog rescue groups usually work in a specific geographic area to help save dogs at the local shelter. Most all-breed groups contact purebred dog rescue groups when they come across purebred dogs, but they do need foster homes to help with the mixed breed dogs they take in. Because of the popularity of so-called designer breeds, there are many bichon mixes entering shelters.
3. Visit your local animal shelter. Although it is unlikely that a purebred bichon is in the shelter, there are more bichon mixes in Delaware shelters. Search the PetFinder website by location to find a shelter near your home.
4. Contact your veterinarian, pet sitter or groomer. Families that need to find a new home for their pets will contact their pet care professionals for help. Let your veterinarian office know that you want to help a homeless bichon, and they will let you now of a dog in need.
5. Watch the active Delaware pet community on Craigslist. The Delaware pet community allows someone who needs to find a new home for a pet to post an email. If you see a bichon offered on Craigslist, be aware that rescue dogs do not cost hundreds of dollars. Sadly, breeders regularly violate Craigslist rules by selling dogs.
