When you find a dog outside, it could belong to someone. Whether you bring the dog to a shelter or decide to keep it and try to look for the owner, you can report the found dog to various places. If the owner is looking for their dog, then they are likely checking out these places each day to see if anyone has reported that the dog has been found. By reporting responsibly, you can help reunite the dog with its owner.
Instructions
1. Visit your city or county's website and navigate to the "Animal Welfare" page. This link could also be located on the page for the city or county's main public animal shelter. If you have trouble finding it, call the main number for the city to inquire.
2. Find the link on your city or county's website that allows you to report a found dog. Many areas have online forms that let you fill in information about the dog, where it was found and how you can be contacted.
3. Report the lost dog to your local SPCA office or other large non-profit animal shelter in your area. Like your city or county's website, large animal shelters generally include a "Found Dog Report" or similar form that you can fill out online. You may want to call the shelter first, however, and ask which way they prefer you to file your report.
4. Use other resources available online to report the found dog in case the owner is using any of those services. Many can be found on the Internet, and your local animal shelter might have links to some of these sites. A few examples include Pets 911.com and Pet Amber Alert.com, both of which allow you to report a found dog.
