Become A Police Officer In Florida

Florida's Department of Law Enforcement adheres to four key concepts: service, integrity, respect and quality. If you have the desire to serve the citizens of Florida, to gain their respect and deliver quality law enforcement while maintaining the integrity of the law enformcement professional, a career as a Florida police officer may be the right course of action. You must meet certain requirements and attend a police academy. After which, you can apply for law enformcent jobs in Florida.


Instructions


1. Be a U.S. citizen who is at least 19 years old--although some departments may require you to be 21, such as the Orlando Police Department. Prove this with your birth certificate and your Social Security number. Naturalized citizens must present their naturalization numbers.


2. Graduate from high school or earn your General Education Diploma (GED). To make you a more lucrative hire, consider graduating from an accredited university with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice though a college education is not required.


3. Have a clean criminal history and a perfect driving record.


4. Take and pass the physical fitness test and the swimming test at a Criminal Justice Testing Center. These centers are located regionally; check with the police department in the areas you intend to apply to for locations.


5. Attend a police academy. Typical academies last 22 weeks. Check Resources for a list of academies in Florida.


6. Apply for open police officer positions at Florida Police Departments.
