Job Requirements


Animal control officers in Pittsburgh are required to enforce animal control laws and ordinances that cover domestic and wild animals. The job also involves assisting other communities that are covered under service contracts, including Castle Shannon, Dormont and Scott Township. Animal control officers also work at the animal shelter.


Out in the field, officers are responsible for the observation and apprehension of animal abusers. Other duties include catching stray animals and following up on complaints about abused or dead animals.


Job Prerequisites


An animal control officer job in Pittsburgh requires at least a high school diploma, but having a bachelor's or master's degree will improve your chances of being interviewed. Courses in biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and general physics are a plus. An animal control officer should have experience working with different types of animals. As part of the police department, the animal control officer will be required to submit to a full background check. The position also requires shift work including weekends and holidays. You will also need to be certified in the use of a small-bore rifle. The salary range for the job is $23,613 to $40,806.
