Many career options are available for the animal lover. While some require extensive education and training, such as a veterinarian or animal behaviorist, others can be obtained with little or no formal training.
Veterinary Technician
Veterinary technicians work closely with veterinarians. They perform tests, such as drawing blood samples, and assist in the diagnosis of illnesses. They also communicate with pet owners about proper care for their animals and administer medications. A two-year college degree in veterinary technology is typically required.
Groomers
Groomers perform activities such as combing an animal's fur or clipping its nails. In general, their goal is to improve the appearance of an animal. They may work on many types of animals, such as dogs, cats or horses. Grooming schools are available, but little technical knowledge or training is required.
Animal Control Officers
Animal control officers often work for municipal governments to help protect and control a community's animal population. They may round up stray animals and help them find homes or investigate incidents of animal mistreatment by humans. They may also be called upon to rescue animals that are injured or caught in a potentially dangerous situation.
Kennel Workers
Kennel workers care for animals in shelters or whose owners have boarded them while they are away. They are responsible for feeding and grooming the animals, monitoring them for health problems, and cleaning their cages. Little experience is required for these positions, although an affinity for animals is a likely prerequisite.
Trainer
An animal trainer teaches animals to modify their behavior or prepares them for events such as dog shows. He could also train animals to perform certain functions, such as a guide dog for a visually impaired person. These positions require much patience and the ability to work with uncooperative animals.
