Spca Agent Job Description

The SPCA has been protecting animals since 1873. Now the SPCA does everything from investigating animal cruelty to spaying and neutering. Becoming an SPCA agent offers you the opportunity to join animal protection efforts while earning a salary.


Responsibilities


An SPCA agent enforces local animal cruelty laws, including animal cruelty prevention, by dividing time between animal control and investigation. He is responsible for preparing search orders, warrants and criminal charges. His duties also include investigating and reporting all animal neglect and abuse, and testifying in court as needed. Additionally, he is responsible for animal control law enforcement, including removal and euthanasia of animals.


Requirements


A high school diploma is required, along with a valid and clean driver's license. An Animal Care Worker certificate program completion may be beneficial in obtaining the job, but agents are required to become trained by the SPCA itself once in the position. Candidates must possess good interpersonal and communication skills, especially in conflict resolution. Moderate to heavy physical labor will be expected.


Salary


According to SimplyHired.com, an SPCA agent can expect a salary of approximately $31,000 as of August 2010, though that will vary depending on geographical location and experience. Medical benefits, paid time off and retirement savings plan are also typically included.
