Start A Pitbull Kennel

Indulge your love of pit bulls and open a kennel business.

Pit bulls are lovable creatures, but due to their aggressive personality toward other dogs, they may not be ideal pets for everyone. A common myth about pit bulls is that they are highly aggressive towards humans. In reality, they usually make terrible guard dogs. If you are a pit bull lover and have had extensive experience with them, opening a pit bull kennel is a business you may wish to consider.

Instructions

1. Perform in-depth research about pit bulls and their characteristics. This is important because you will need to understand that most pit bulls cannot be around each other, especially if they are of the same sex or not neutered or spayed. You will need to thoroughly familiarize yourself with the behavior of pit bulls because you will be liable for other people's pets.

2. Find out if you have the proper funding to start a pit bull kennel. It is important to have a secure source of income for your new business for at least six months. Many costs are involved to start, including rent, equipment for each dog pen and dog food. Taking out a loan is another option, but first weigh all your other options.

3. Obtain the proper paperwork to start your kennel. Go down to your local city hall and inquire about the specific zoning laws, health and safety regulations and permits required to open a pit bull kennel. Also, look into obtaining liability insurance.

4. Find a large space to house your kennel. A warehouse is ideal, since adult pit bulls will need large pens. Create each pen with metal fencing that is available at a hardware store. Add soft mats or dog beds to the pen, a few chew toys and a food and water bowl. Make sure you also have an outside area where the dogs can play.

5. Advertise your business. Post ads in schools, community centers, libraries and supermarkets. Spread the word with your family and friends. Also, establish a relationship with your local vets so they will refer you to pit bull owners.

6. Start small to gain the trust of your clients. Pit bull owners are highly aware of their dogs' behavior around other dogs and need reassurance they are in good hands. A good way to gain their trust is to start out with only a few dogs. This way you can give each more careful attention. As you gain experience and confidence, and your customers see your reliability, you can slowly expand your clientele.
