What Are Some Volunteer Organizations

Volunteer to help those in need today.


Volunteer organizations provide a valuable community service for those in need. Types of services include soup kitchens, homeless shelters, youth mentoring services, child advocacy services and many more. Not only do volunteer organizations play an important role in the lives of those less fortunate, it also plays a significant role in the lives of volunteers.


Habitat for Humanity


Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity provides decent, affordable housing for families in need worldwide. Volunteers of this non-profit organization have built over 400,000 homes. While building homes is a major focus of the organization, Habitat for Humanity also encourages volunteers and supporters to reach out to government officials in order to make changes to housing policies. Habitat for Humanity also provides youth programs, a Women Build program, disaster response services, an exterior home preservation service as well as an international volunteer program.


Project Hope


Project Hope provides proper health care, antibiotics and medical supplies wherever its needed around the world. The mission of this volunteer organization includes strengthening poor health facilities, educating health professionals as well as providing volunteer medical help for those in need. Project Hope supported more than 20 humanitarian operations, cared for more than 550,000 people and delivered more than $30 million in donated medicines and medical supplies. Project Hope provides various volunteer opportunities as well as encourages volunteers to fundraise in order to continue their lifesaving support.


Lion's Club International


The world's largest service club organization started in 1917 when a Chicago businessman told members of his business club that they should do volunteer work in order to better their communities. Within three years, the club became internationally known. The Lion's Club now boasts 1.35 million members with more than 45,000 clubs around the world. Mostly recognized for its fight against blindness and other vision problems, volunteers of the Lion's Club also participate in activities that help save the planet, support health initiatives, provide aid in senior centers, schools and hospitals and help with disaster relief.


The Humane Society of the United States


The mission of the Humane Society of the United States is to protect animals from cruelty, neglect and exploitation. In addition, the organization supports wildlife preservation, farm animal and habitat protection. The organization provides emergency shelters, education and training as well as other public services for local humane societies. Check with your local humane society to see if any volunteer opportunities exist.
