Ship A Car From Minneapolis To Phoenix

Shipping a car is an alternative to driving it to a new destination.

A long term move across the country involves logistical nightmares, including getting your belongings to your new residence. Getting your car to your new home can be challenging, especially if the distance between your new and old home are great. Shipping your car is an option, which can be arranged through numerous ]companies. The process each company uses is similar. But there are basic issues to remember when shipping your car, including prepping your vehicle, company research and filling out claims forms.

Instructions

1. Obtain quotes from car shipping companies (see Resources) you are considering hiring for the job of moving your car from Minneapolis to Phoenix. Many of these quotes can be obtained online. Ask questions about whether you have to drop the car off at a particuar destination or if the company will come pick it up. Ask for price estimates for an open truck (where your car is exposed) and a closed truck (where your car is encased). Ask how much weight is permissible inside the car or trunk.

2. Call the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (1-888-368-7238) to check a company's shipping record. Ask about filed complaints, lawsuits and the insurance policy held by the company you are considering.

3. Ask the shipping company about what insurance packages are offered. Purchase a policy with the shipping company to cover damage to your car during transport if your own personal car insurance does not cover any potential damage.

4. Wash and detail your vehicle before dropping it off to be shipped. Take note of any internal and external damages on your car before being shipped. Take photographs with date and time stamps. These photos and personal notes about the car's condition will help verify your vehicle's condition prior to shipping in the event there is damage.

5. Ship your car with a low amount of gas in the tank (about a quarter full). Excess gas will add weight to a car, which may contribute to the overall price. Do not keep valuables or personal items in your car while it is being shipped.

6. File a claims form with your shipping company if your car is returned in a damaged condition. Include the photographs you took before the shipment, and explain in detail what damage was done. File your claim no later than 24 hours after picking up your car or after the car has been delivered to you.
