The Shih Tzu breed of dogs originated in Tibet. The average specimen weighs less than 12 lbs. and has a shoulder height of 10 inches. Shih Tzus have a 10- to 12-year life span. The dogs are social by nature and do well with other breeds. Dogs are rescued from shelters, given up by owners who can not longer care for them, and are occasionally found and brought to the rescue. 2. Read over the information presented to you about the breed. Adopting a rescue dog is something to take seriously, and you want to learn all that you can about Shih Tzus.
3. When adopting through the Lhasa Apso Shih Tzu Rescue or Southern Shih Tzu & Toy Breed Rescue and Sanctuary, click on the link for the adoption application. Fill out the application and send it in to the address listed. When adopting through The Georgia Shih Tzu, email the owner of the organization directly.
4. Wait for a volunteer to contact you to set an appointment for a home visit. When the volunteer visits your home, make sure that all family members, including other pets, are present.
5. Expect your references to be contacted.
6. Sign the adoption papers and turn over the adoption fee, which can range anywhere from $200 to $500. Enjoy your new lifelong companion.
