A stray is any domestic animal without an owner or whose owner cannot be found.
Kansas domestic animal law protects animals and people. In Kansas, any person may take in a stray found on his property or on a public road adjoining his property.
Strays
A person taking in a stray must feed and care for the animal and notify the sheriff within 24 hours. If the sheriff finds the animal's owner, the animal will be returned to its owner.
Claiming Animals
An animal in a shelter or pound is given at least three days in which a owner can claim the animal. The pound or shelter must try to find the owner of the animal and notify the owner, if known. At any time, the animal may be taken to a veterinarian or euthanized if the animal is diseased or injured beyond recovery.
Livestock
If a dog injures, kills or worries another domestic animal, the dog's owner shall be responsible for any damages. Any person is allowed to shoot a dog found harming livestock.
Abandoning Animals
An animal taken to a veterinarian for care and not picked up after 10 days shall be taken to the nearest humane shelter or pound. After abandoning an animal, the former owner gives up his rights to the animal.
