Advertise Using Craigslist

Developed by Craig Newmark, Craigslist launched in 1995. Not too long afterward, businesses began posting open job positions. Since then, Craigslist has grown into a full advertising website with categories ranging from services to gigs, and advertising is free. Once you've created the wording for your advertisement, and taken any images to go with it, posting your advertisement on Craigslist is both simple and specific to your location.

Instructions

1. Go to Craigslist.org and choose the state and city in which you want to advertise. If you don't find that city listed, choose the one nearest to your target audience.

2. Click on the appropriate main category. Choose "jobs" for help wanted ads, "services" for any personal or business services, "for sale" if you're posting an item, "housing" if you're listing a house or apartment, or the appropriate section under "personals."

3. Select the "post" link in the top-right corner. Choose the appropriate subcategory, or the one closest to your advertisement. For example, if you're a career consultant, you could select "small biz ads" within the main "services" category.

4. Sign up for an account, if applicable. Craigslist will prompt you to set up an account. If it doesn't prompt you, skip this step.

5. Type in a title related to what you are advertising in the "Posting Title" section. For example, if you fix computers you might write, "Computer fixing services." Write the price and specific location, if necessary. Type your email address into the appropriate boxes.

6. Enter your advertisement's text in the "posting description" box. Click the "add/edit images" button, if you want to attach any photos. You cannot attach a PDF. Press "continue" to preview your post, then click "continue" again.

7. Check your email inbox. Craigslist will send you an email. Click the link to confirm your posting.
