The Founder Of The South Carolina Colony

South Carolina was one of the richest colonies founded, with rice as its main crop. It was founded as one large colony of Carolina and later split into North and South Carolina.

History

In 1663, Virginia had already been founded when King Charles II issued an order to eight nobles that they needed to settle the area that was south of Virginia. The nobles founded Carolina. Some say that the founding was by King Charles since he issued the order, while others say it was the eight nobles.

The Founder

Although eight nobles were sent to settle Carolina, William Sayle established the first settlement in 1671 and is credited with being the founder of Carolina. The 200 Carolina colonists first set up homes along the Ashley River.

Fun Fact

Although Carolina's founding year is listed at 1670, during that time there was no South Carolina -- it was still called Carolina. North Carolina was settled in 1671. It was not until 1729 that South Carolina actually received its full name and separated from the North.
