Obtain Louisiana Adoption Records From 1953

Access a Louisiana adoption record through the mail.

Louisiana adoption laws require the Department of Social Services' Office of Community Services to maintain a voluntary adoption registry for people seeking information about their adoptive parents or adopted child. Someone who qualifies to seek information about a 1953 Louisiana adoption must be at least 18 years of age and the adoptee, an adoptive parent, a birth parent or a parent or sibling of the birth parents. Then requesting the adoption information is a relatively simple process.

Instructions

1. Write a letter requesting information on the adoption. Include all relevant information, such as your name, date of birth, when the adoption took place and other information you know about the adoption.

2. Include a photocopy of your proof of identity, such as a driver's license.

3. Mail the letter and proof of identity to the Louisiana Voluntary Adoption Registry. Its address is:

Louisiana Voluntary Adoption Registry

P.O. Box 3318

Baton Rouge, LA 70821

4. Wait for an answer from the Louisiana Voluntary Adoption Registry. If the party about which you seek information authorized the information's release, then the registry will mail you that information. If the party didn't authorize its release, you will be notified by mail.

5. Seek the adoption information through a website if the information isn't available from the Louisiana Voluntary Adoption Registry. Online databases such as Intuit QuickBase allow people to search for family members; Intuit QuickBase's fee was $10 in January 2011. That website lets people seeking adoption details to post information in a forum, and other people may respond with information about the adoption. Include all relevant information so that anyone viewing the post learns details.
