Train A Pug Dog

Train a Pug Dog

Pugs crave the affection and approval of their owners, which, in general, makes them easier to train than some other breeds. Training should begin as soon as you bring your pug puppy home. Start with house training, offering simple commands such as "come," "sit" and "stay" and discouraging misbehavior such as nipping at members of the family or chewing on furniture.

Instructions

Training a Pug

1. Buy a puppy crate that is just large enough for your pug puppy to stand up, turn around and lie down; anything bigger and it may designate a corner of the crate as his toilet. The crate is where the puppy will eat, sleep and stay when it is not interacting with you or your family. After each meal and every few hours, take your pug outside, always to the same spot, and stay there until it has relieved itself. Each time it does, praise him, pet him and perhaps give him a treat.

2. Begin teaching your puppy the "no" command the day it arrives in your house. Puppies are cute, and you may be inclined to be indulgent, but if you do not correct bad behavior now, the pug will continue to do it as an adult. Every time the puppy misbehaves, say "no" in a loud, firm, clear voice. Be consistent so the pug does not become confused but comes to understand that it must obey your commands.

3. Say "sit" and as you speak the command, gently push down on your puppy's rear until it is seated. Then reward the puppy. Give the command "stay," and back away from the puppy. If he has obeyed, give the command "come" Repeat this obedience training lesson several times a day until the pug obeys each command. Always reward the puppy each time it obeys.
