Rescue a dog from a local shelter.
When looking for a dog, instead of purchasing one from a breeder or pet shop, consider rescuing one from a shelter. Unfortunately, many shelters will euthanize dogs if they are at the shelter for too long. Some shelters euthanize dogs after a week, others will keep them at the shelter a bit longer, and sadly, certain breeds, like pit bulls, may be euthanized after only a couple of days. In Northern California, there are dozens of different shelters to adopt your new best friend.
Instructions
1. Choose what kind of dog that you want. There are many Northern California shelters that house breed-specific dogs. The Northern California Sled Dog Rescue, Northern California Beagle Rescue, German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California, and the Northern California Golden Retriever Rescue are just some of the breed-specific rescues.
2. Find a potential match online. Visit Pet Finder and type into the search box the city that you live in or your zip code and press "Search." If you're not actually from Northern California, type the zip code "92110," and expand your search area to a 100-mile radius. Narrow your search by typing in the breeds that you prefer, as well as the age preferred.
3. Call or visit the local Humane Society to adopt a shelter dog. If you don't see what you're looking for at the Humane Society, the worker will be able to refer you to a different local shelter.

4. Spend some time playing with the puppy or dog when you think that you've found the right one for you. Spending time with the dog will allow you to see the dog's temperament and connect with him. Some shelters even allow you to bring the dog to your home to see how he will react to his surroundings, other animals, significant others and any children.
5. Fill out an adoption application when you've found the perfect pup. Don't forget to add references to your application---many shelters now require this.
