1. Field-dress the game by slicing into the belly and removing the internal organs.

2. Remove the animal's hide.

3. Trim off all the visible fat and connective tissue with your knife.

4. Remove the meat from the bone.

5. Slice the meat into thin strips. Slice with the grain of the muscle. The strips must be uniform in thickness for even drying. Thinner strips dry faster, so slice the meat as thinly as possible. Strips 1/4 inch thick or less are ideal. The strips should be from 8 to 20 inches long if possible.

Drying

6. Find a small tree or shrub with several branches at least 3 1/2 feet above the ground.

7. Break the tips off several branches. Leave a minimum of 12 inches of space between the tipped branches. A branch that is more than 1/4 inch thick but no bigger than half an inch is best. Smaller branches will not be able to support the weight of the meat as it dries.

8. Hang the meat on the branches lengthwise by using the branches like a meat hook. The branch of the tree should pierce the meat 1 inch from the top of the strip. Remove any leaves or other branches that touch the meat. The air needs to circulate freely around the strip of meat.

9. The drying time depends on several factors. Meat dries fastest in warm, dry conditions. Depending on the thickness, it can take up to four days for meat to fully dry. The meat is fully dry when the surface appears wrinkled and leathery. The texture will turn from soft to firm and finally hard. The color of dried meat will be dark red to almost black. It will have the appearance of beef jerky. When protected from dirt and moisture, dried meat can be stored for up to six months.

Identify an Irish Setter

The Irish setter is a distinct sporting breed, making this breed an active bird dog with a touch of aristocracy. This breed should not be shy, hostile or timid, but should be outgoing and have a stable temperament. The Irish Setter is a mix of Irish water spaniel, Irish terrier, English setter, pointer spaniel and some Gordon setter added to the mix. This is a high-energy dog and it requires regular exercise, so if your family is the couch-potato type, this would not be a breed for you.

1. Look at the general appearance of the Irish setter. It is elegantly built and stands over two feet at the shoulders. It has a straight, fine glossy coat that requires constant grooming to prevent matting.

2. Check the size and proportion of this breed. Males should be around 27 inches at the shoulder and weigh about 70 pounds. Females should be 25 inches and weigh 60 pounds. When measured from the breastbone to the rear of the thigh, it is longer than tall. Males have a more masculine structure than females, but females, while appearing feminine, should not be slight of bone.

3. Make sure the head is long and lean—with the length being at least double the width between the ears. The delicate chiseling along the muzzle, along the cheeks and around the eyes give the Irish setter an extremely beautiful head. The breed’s expression should be soft and alert. The almond shaped eyes are medium-sized and are a dark to medium brown. The ears sport a thin leather and hang neatly folded close to the head. The chiseled muzzle is somewhat deep with jaws that are nearly equal in length, leading to a black or chocolate nose and wide nostrils.

4. Look at the long, strong neck. It should not be thick, and should be slightly arched, fitting smoothly into the dog’s shoulders. The tail is almost level with the croup and is strong at the root. It tapers to a fine point and is almost long enough to reach the hocks. It may be carried with a slight upward curve—almost level with the back. The chest is a deep chest and reaches the elbows, but is of moderate width. The straight front legs are sinewy and lead to smallish feet that are very firm with arched, close toes. The wide hindquarters are powerful and sport well-developed thighs. The long rear legs are muscular from the hip to the hock and are well angulated. The feet are as the front—smallish and very firm with arched, close toes.

5. Note the differences in the coat. The hair on the head and forelegs is short and fine, while the rest of the Irish setter has moderate length, flat hair. There is long, silky feathering on the ears, back of the forelegs and thighs, and a fringe of hair on the belly and tail. The coat should be mahogany or rich chestnut red. Some Irish setters may have a small spot of white on the chest, throat or toes, but there are no other colors.

What to Feed a Baby Lamb?

Although ideally a baby lamb will be with its mother, you might find yourself in a position where you have to feed a lamb. A lamb can survive and live a healthy life if it is hand fed as long as it is done properly. Knowing what to feed and at what points to feed it is critical to the lamb's well-being.

Types

There are three basic types of food that a lamb will eat while it was young. The first kind of food is milk. The second is hay and other vegetation. The third is grain. When feeding milk, it is ideal to give the lamb its mother's milk. If possible, milk the ewe and put that in the lamb's bottle. If the mother's milk is not available, lamb formulas can be purchased.

Time Frame

A lamb will drink milk for the first several weeks of its life. The time frame when it begins to eat solid food will vary. Watch the lamb when it is out in the pasture to see when it starts testing the grass. Lambs will nibble on grass just a few days after they are born, but they won't actually begin eating it until later. Once you notice that they are actually eating the grass, you can start giving them alfalfa. Observe the lamb to see how much alfalfa it eats. Once it begins eating more alfalfa and drinking less of the milk you offer it, you can start giving it small amounts of grain. Begin with a lamb starter feed and move to a high-protein feed as it gets older. You do not want to give it too much grain at a time, or it may get an upset stomach. Once the lamb starts eating grain, you can begin gradually weaning it off of the milk.

As previously mentioned, it is most ideal for a lamb to be fed by its own mother. Hand-feeding a lamb allows you to monitor the lamb's food intake and control its diet. You can make sure it that it is getting enough to eat, whereas sometimes when a ewe is a poor mother, the lamb does not get all the nourishment it needs. One of the main benefits to hand-feeding a lamb is that bottle-fed lambs are generally much friendlier than lambs who are fed by their mothers. If you are raising a lamb to show or as a pet, this is a desirable trait.

Warning

Newborn lambs need to be fed at least every three hours in order to survive. If you are going to bottle feed a lamb, you have to be committed to it, otherwise the lamb will die. It is important to pay attention to the lamb, because they may want to eat more often than every three hours. You must be available to feed the lamb if it is ready to eat.

Effects

In general, if a lamb is fed properly, you will not be able to tell the difference between a bottle-fed lamb and one fed by its mother by the time they are a year old. However, you may notice a difference when the lambs are young. A bottle-fed baby will often be smaller than other lambs, and may not look as filled out. You may also notice a difference in the lamb's behavior. Typically a bottle-fed lamb will be more inclined to spend its time with people than with other lambs. If you are raising it with other lambs, this might change as it gets older, but sometimes it does not.

Gay adoption laws vary from state to state. While Florida expressly bans gay and lesbian people from adopting children, most other states simply have no clear law against gay adoption. Gay adoption usually happens when an individual person adopts a child. Other issues, such as when a partner in a same-sex relationship has legal claim to adopt their partner's biological children, can be ambiguous or undefined in many areas of the country.

Adoption by Gay Individuals

Florida is the only state in the United States that expressly prohibits an individual to adopt children based exclusively on the applicant's sexual orientation. According to FLA. STAT. § 63.042(3), no homosexual person may adopt children. In 2000, Utah passed legislation to prohibit any unmarried person from adopting children. As gay marriage is not permitted in the state, this included a de facto prohibition against gay and lesbian people. In the rest of the states of the union, single gay and lesbian people may petition to adopt children, as a single adoption; that is, without any other person becoming the legal guardian.

Biological Children of Same-Sex Couples

When a child is biologically born to a gay couple, the non-biological parent generally has no legal rights to the child. Exceptions to this rule are states that allow for civil unions and also allow for streamline adoptions by non-biological parents. These states include California, Connecticut, Illinois, Vermont, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Florida prohibits a person to adopt their same-sex partner's biological children, as it prohibits any gay adoption. Nebraska, Wisconsin and Ohio officially bar a person to adopt their same-sex partner's biological child, unless the biological parent defers their legal parental rights to the child. Utah bars adoption by an unmarried person residing with another person, if they are engaged in a sexual relationship. As all gay and lesbian couples are unmarried according to the state, this includes gay and lesbian couples.

Most states have no specific prohibition against same-sex couples adopting children. The exceptions being Florida, which discriminates in adoption laws against all gay and lesbian people, and Utah, which allows for adoption only by married heterosexual couples. Mississippi also passed MISS. CODE ANN. § 93-17-3., which prohibits same-sex couples from adopting children. North Carolina denies gay and lesbian parents adoption privileges, as it allows no two people to file jointly for adoption if they are unmarried, which, according to North Carolina law, includes all gay and lesbian couples. States and regions which explicitly allow for adoption by same-sex couples include California, Connecticut, Washington D.C., Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and Vermont.

Ohio Privacy Laws On Adoption

Ohio has laws protecting the privacy of people involved in the adoption process

Ohio privacy laws governing adoptions in the state are designed to respect the privacy of the adoptive parents, the natural parents and the children involved in the adoption process. They also specify the rights of each party involved in an adoption to discover the identities of the other parties. Access to non-identifying medical information is permitted under Ohio law, as this may have an impact on the adopted child's health and well-being.

Access to Records

Ohio laws recognizes two types of information contained in adoption records that may be accessed on request. Non-identifying information gives details of information, such as medical history, that does not otherwise disclose the name and contact information of the person or persons who are the subject of the inquiry. Under Ohio law, revised statutes 3107.66, 3107.47 and 3107.49 contain the rights to access non-identifying information. An adopted child over the age of 18 can request access to non-identifying information, as can an adoptive parent of an adopted child below the age of 18. A member of the family of an adoptive child who has died may also request this information, as can the birth parent of an adopted child who is now over the age of 18. A birth sibling over the age of 18 can request the information of an adopted child and any birth family member can request the information if the birth parent is deceased.

Access to Identifying Information

An adopted child, or the child's adoptive parents if the child is under the age of 18, have to submit requests for the child's adoption file to the Ohio Department of Health. Adoption file requests are governed by Ohio revised codes 3107.47 and 3107.49. The request for the file will be denied if the file contains forms completed by both birth parents requesting a denial of release. However, if the file only contains a denial of release form from one birth parent, the file can be released with the identifying information of the birth parent who has supplied the form removed. If the request from the adopted child or the child's adopted parents is denied, or is supplied with part of the information deleted, the Department of Health undertakes to inform the child or his adopted parents if one or both of the birth parents authorize the release of their information at a future date.

Non-Identifying Information

The Ohio revised code gives specific information concerning what constitutes non-identifying information with regard to requests for adoption information. Non-identifying information is specified in Ohio revised codes 3107.66 and 3107.60, and include the birth parent's age at the time the child was adopted, but not the age at the time the child was born, as this could be used to help trace the identity of the birth parent. The medical and genetic history of birth parents is not considered to be identifying information, so this is available on request, along with the sex, age and medical history of the adopted child's siblings and extended family. The ethnic background, religion and occupation of the birth parents is also available on request, and is considered to be non-identifying information.

3. Apply for Certificate of Exempt Status from the Wisconsin Department of Trade Agriculture and Consumer Protection. Apply for a Charitable Organization Registration if your shelter will handle more than 25 dogs in a one-year period.

4. File a 501(c)(3) application with the Internal Revenue Service as a civic or social organization and apply for an federal employer ID number. The 501(c)(3) certification makes contributions to the organization tax deductible, an important consideration for contributors. Employer IDs identify even volunteer groups as tax-exempt when doing business and must be used to file 990 non-profit tax forms.

5. Make building plans that conform to municipal zoning and building codes. Plans may need to be approved by a plan commission. Many small communities hire professional building inspection services; these inspectors can be very helpful, particularly if there is need for a shelter in the community.

6. Solicit contracts with city, county and area police departments to handle strays. These contracts often provide operating capital. There are many successful volunteer shelters in rural Wisconsin; find out how they manage intake and adoption and their fee structures. Use this information to form your budget and policies.

7. Train volunteers to clean and tend every animal daily and schedule 24-hour availability to exercise animals. Designate a group with "people-skills" to do intake and public relations work.
