Dog Training Tips For Strangers

Dogs must be trained to react well to strangers from an early age. This training should be reinforced continuously throughout a dog's life. Dogs that react with fear or aggression toward strangers are unsafe pets, even if they are always friendly toward family members. Training a dog to react positively to strangers begins with puppy socialization and should continue with regular visits to public places where interaction with strangers will occur.

Puppy Socialization

The goal of puppy socialization is to expose puppies to as many new experiences as possible at a young age. Puppies that are well-socialized will remain bold and curious for life. Puppies that miss out on socialization are usually shy and skittish as adults.

During your puppy's socialization period, expose her to strangers as frequently as possible. Try the scavenger hunt method: Make a list of types of people your dog has never met, and go on a walk in a busy public area trying to introduce her to these types of people. This should include people of a different race than the owner, people who use wheelchairs, people using crutches, children of various ages, teenagers on skateboards and people wearing hats. You can make the list as long as you like. A puppy should meet strangers with every possible trait as early in life as possible.

While socializing your puppy, you'll meet many people who ask to pet her. When this happens, take advantage of the opportunity to train your puppy to greet strangers politely. Give the stranger a small treat and say, "My puppy is being trained to greet people properly. Could you tell her to sit before you pet her, please? Give her the treat when she sits. Then you're welcome to pet her!"

Most people will be happy to help you teach good manners to your dog.

Ongoing Training

One should never presume that an adult dog is fully socialized and will always react well to strangers. Even if the dog was impeccably socialized as a puppy, he won't stay that way unless he's frequently exposed to strangers and new sights, sounds and smells. Adult dogs should have at least one outing per week in a public place where they will meet strangers. Dog parks, hiking trails, coffee shop patios and street malls are great for ongoing training.

Make sure that socializing your dog with strangers doesn't mean allowing them to teach him bad habits. If he jumps on a stranger, explain that your dog is not permitted to jump up on people and ask the stranger to turn away and give him no attention until he sits. Cue the dog to sit and when he is calm, ask the stranger to resume petting him.

Canine Good Citizens

Well socialized dogs that are friendly to strangers have already learned many of the skills required to pass an AKC Canine Good Citizen test. Consider obtaining this certification for your pet if you intend for her to accompany you frequently in public places. Many establishments that are not always dog-friendly will permit dogs that carry a Canine Good Citizen certification.

Preserve A Dead Animal For Burial

You've had it since it was a kitten; why not bury it at home?

If you're burying an animal, it's probable that it was important to you. Although there are animal memorial parks, you may prefer to bury your pet on your property. If your neighborhood permits the burying of animals, and you have a place on your grounds that's appropriate, burying your pet nearby may be comforting and help you with your grief.

Instructions

1. Move quickly. There's no need for special equipment to prepare an animal for burial. However, because your pet won't be embalmed, you have to make arrangements to bury it with some speed. Clean your pet as much as possible; wrap it in sheets or a blanket, if you'd like.

2. Purchase an inexpensive beverage cooler and fill it with ice. Put your pet in and keep the cooler closed. When you do remove it, it'll be stiff both from freezing and rigor mortis. When the ice has melted, remove the water and refresh the ice. Do this for no longer than two days after your pet's death.

3. Dig a deep hole so no other animals can get access. It should be 2 to 3 feet deep and just wide enough to fit your pet.

4. Take the pet from the cooler. Wrap it in a towel or favorite blanket, if you haven't already.

5. Place your pet in the hole and cover it very well with dirt. Tamp down until the dirt has hardened.

6. Place a memorial to your pet, if you'd like.

Keep Raccoons Out Of Cat Doors

Raccoons can enter a house in several ways, making a mess and exposing your pets to diseases. They also bring pests such as ticks and fleas into the house. One of the easiest ways raccoons enter is through a cat door. Clever raccoons are even able to get through cat doors that are specifically designed to prevent wild animals from entering, such as magnetic doors triggered by a sensor on your pet's collar. Raccoons entering cat doors are searching for food, so deterring the raccoons or eliminating your home as a food source will cause the animals to lose interest (see References 1 and 3).

Instructions

1. Install a lockable cat door. Lock the door at night when raccoons are the most active (see Reference 3).

2. Hide or relocate pet food that will attract raccoons (see Reference 2).

3. Install a bright light or a light triggered by motion sensors above the pet door (see Reference 3).

4. Place an ammonia-soaked rag inside the pet door at night (see Reference 2).

5. Place a radio near the cat door entrance. Tune it to a talk radio station to give the appearance that humans are present (see Reference 2).

6. Place commercially available raccoon repellent granules near the entrance to the cat door (see Reference 3).

Congenital or Hereditary Problems

Congenital problems are those present from birth, while hereditary problems are genetic and may appear at any age. Pet lemon laws cover these conditions from 10 days to 2 years.

Other Requirements

Some states require sellers to provide copies of the lemon law to all pet buyers, post the lemon law on their premises, or obtain certifications of veterinary inspection on all pets offered for sale. A minimum age for sale may be required, generally 8 weeks. A pet lemon law may provide for an exemption if the seller discloses an illness or defect at the time of sale.

Remedies

Different options exist as recourse to the buyer for pets that develop problems within the parameters of the pet lemon law. The best solution to an armadillo problem is to rid them from your yard altogether. An aggressive method such as repelling them from their home will be faster than other passive methods such as eliminating a food source or waiting until they fall into a trap. Instructions

1. Spray castor oil around the burrows of the armadillos with a spray bottle or liquid chemical sprayer. This is a repellent that will deter armadillos from living in the burrows.

2. Use natural granular repellents to drive the armadillos from their homes. Spread a repellent that contains a mix of 10 percent rucinus communis oil and 90 percent attapulgite hormite clay in and around the burrows with a spray bottle or liquid chemical sprayer. This method is non-toxic.

3. Apply Permethrin in and around the burrows with a spray bottle or liquid chemical sprayer. Wait 10 days and apply a layer of Permethrin Pro if the armadillos have yet to leave.

Experience

According to PayScale, pet groomers with one to four years of experience make up 45 percent of the total number of groomers. Ohio Adoption Laws

Ohio adoption laws permit unmarried adults, an unmarried minor parent of an adoptee, and a husband and wife to adopt minor children and certain adults. Birth parents who give adoption consent may request that their child or the adoptive parents receive certain materials. This may include giving the child the birth parent's first name or photographs

Open Adoption Agreement

The birth parent who voluntarily allows the adoption of her child may ask the agency or attorney handling the case to arrange for an open adoption agreement between the birth parent and the adoptive parents. This allows both sides to agree to mutually acceptable conditions concerning the adoption. A lawyer or agency that declines this request must refer the birth parent to an attorney or agency that can honor their request.

Spaying and Neutering

If you adopt a potbellied pig from a reputable rescue, you can be sure the animal is spayed or neutered. Lack of spaying or neutering is a primary reason an original owner gives up the pet. Boars not only smell bad, but at sexual maturity start displaying various behavioral problems related to the desire to procreate. Unspayed females come into heat every three weeks -- usually with incessant vocalizing, restlessness and mood swings if they're not bred. Male piglets are fertile as early as 2 months of age, while females start heat cycling about the age of 4 months.

Adoption

You can find pig rescues and adoptable animals throughout the country. Not only is your potential pet spayed and neutered, but you'll know the size of any adult. At maturity, between the ages of two and three years, potbellied pigs weigh between 50 and 150 pounds. Multiple Pigs

If possible, adopt more than one pig. They are social creatures, enjoying each others' company. According to the California Potbellied Pig Association, "only" pigs are more likely to exhibit issues with aggressiveness or assertiveness. "It is actually easier to care of two well adjusted pigs than one spoiled, demanding and possibly aggressive pig," according to the CBPA. Pigs also like to snuggle with each other when sleeping. Two pigs can play and exercise with each other, rather than waiting for a person to initiate games and walks. If you're a real "pig person," by adopting two pigs you free up space for two more unwanted pigs to find sanctuary and a possible permanent home.

Care For Malnourished Dogs

Feed the dog only small amounts at each feeding.

If you've recently rescued a malnourished dog, you may be alarmed by the animal's sickly, bone thin appearance. However, your rescued dog is lucky if malnourishment is its only problem, since the condition is entirely treatable. To make sure that this is the case, before you begin your home recovery regimen, take it to the vet for a thorough examination. A neglected dog may likely have many other problems besides malnourishment or that are contributing to the condition, such as dehydration, parasite infestation or infection.

Instructions

1. Weigh the dog so you can get a good indication of how much food to feed the animal as well as for future reference when the dog starts putting on weight. Weigh yourself first, then weight the dog.

2. Offer the dog food, but only small amounts at one time. Check the food bag for ideal portion sizes based on the dog's current weight, and divide that amount by five. Feed the dog that amount every half hour. While some websites suggest adding a supplement to a starving dogs' diet, an article published at the Washington State University Veterinary College website states that those are unnecessary and will not speed recovery.

3. Write down how much your malnourished dog eats at each sitting, recording that and at what time the dog ate. After two days, the dog should be starting to consume the right amount of food for its size if all incremental feedings are added together. If not, try changing to wet food or to another high-quality brand of kibble. If all else fails, consult your vet about whether the dog must be force fed.

4. Continue this feeding schedule for at least three days and up to seven days, when the danger of Refeeding Syndrome passes. According to the Pet Center website, this syndrome occurs when a starved dog is fed too much too fast after an extended period of malnourishment, and can cause muscle weakness and cramping, as well as seizures and heart irregularities.

5. Weigh the dog once in the morning and once at night and average the two numbers together to get a daily weight that is less effected by loss bowel movements or vomiting, which the dog may be experiencing.

6. Allow the dog to sleep when not feeding. Some exhausted, malnourished dogs may sleep all the time that they aren't eating. Give the dog a warm, comfortable bed in which to recuperate. If your house is cold or has cold floors, you might try adding heated bottles of water to the pet's bed to keep it warm.

7. Take the dog on short walks daily after it has regained most of its weight; look for weights of at least 80 percent of the animal's ideal weight. Once the dog seems tired, bring it home immediately.

If you enjoy your canine pal, you may be considering adding a second dog to your family. Before you make the decision, think through some of the positive and negative aspects of bringing a new dog into your home, not only for you, but for the mental and physical health and well being of your first dog.

1. Consider the time and money that will be involved with a second dog and be sure that you have adequate resources to provide proper care. A second dog will mean twice the feeding, grooming, walking, training, veterinary care and twice the expense.

2. Think about why you want a second dog and make sure they are the right reasons. Don't get a second dog to keep the first dog company or to provide more activity and exercise for your first dog. A second dog should never be used to replace quality time playing and exercising with your dog.

3. Be sure that your current dog will be able to adapt to a new dog. Consider her behavior, personality, socialization and how she reacts to other dogs. If your dog is shy, fearful, protective or jealous, she may be miserable if you add a second dog. If your first dog has behavior problems, the new dog can learn those behaviors from the first dog, exacerbating the problems.

4. Expect more challenges if you travel with your dog. Traveling with one dog can be a challenge, and traveling with two dogs can often be nearly overwhelming. Unless you have a large vehicle, space will be at a premium. Many motels will allow one dog but won't allow two. If you board your dog, the expense will be doubled.

1. Find a credible adoption agency about three to four months before your baby is born. Research multiple agencies, and interview each company individually to make sure their goals and values are similar to yours. Ask friends and family members if they have anyone that they can refer you to, whether it be an individual looking to adopt, or an agency. At this point, you will want to gain a full understanding of what it means to terminate your parental rights.

2. Verify that the agencies you are considering have a license. Call the state adoption agency and confirm that the licenses are current and that no major complaints have been filed.

3. Look through each agencies files for people who have been approved for adoption. Each agency should have photos of each family, their biological background, income, information on pets and other siblings and their age. If you have preferences for the type of family you are looking for, narrow out families who do not meet your needs.

4. Do background checks. As it gets closer to the adoption, and you start narrowing down your choices, verify that the adoption contenders do not have a criminal history.

5. Set up an appointment to meet the families in person. It's important to have an in-person interview with the potential parents because you may like a family on paper, but find that they are not what you are looking for once you begin speaking with them. If you would like to remain in the baby's life, be sure to discuss your plans at this point, and confirm that the parent's agree to allowing you to maintain a relationship.

6. Make a decision. Once you've feel that you have a full understanding of each family and you have come to an agreement, choose a family to adopt your newborn.

A few moments of your time can make a homeless person's day.

John Bunyan said, "You have not lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you." This opportunity to live presents itself nearly every day. At some point you cross paths with someone, whether it be a homeless person, a battered wife or a frightened child, nearly every day. In the case of a homeless person, just a few moments of your time can be enough to make a difference he cannot repay.

Instructions

1. Carry an extra sandwich in your lunch that you can give to a homeless person on your way into the office. You can carry extras of anything you make for your lunch. This takes little extra time to prepare in the morning and it may be the only meal this person gets that day.

2. Spend a few minutes talking to her and, more importantly, listening to her. This simple act of respect counters the dramatic self-esteem issues that arise from being homeless. Ask him about his hometown, or his family. Do not focus on his current situation, just talk to him as you would anyone else.

3. Help him search for a job. If you see this person consistently, start talking about his skills and give him a copy of the classifieds section of the local newspaper. You may even be able to bring him some hygiene items to help him prepare to look for a job.

Remove an Unwanted Toolbar

Internet browser toolbars often install themselves alongside software programs. Toolbars can often be unnecessary and annoying, taking up memory and slowing your computer down. However, they are relatively easy to remove and disable.

Instructions

1. Access the Internet using whatever Web browser you usually use. At the top of the page, notice the toolbars, which are basically rows of buttons. The first step in removing them is to turn them off, which allows them to be uninstalled. To do this, right-click above the toolbars on the blank space above your address bar. Turn off the unwanted toolbar by clicking on the name of the toolbar and removing the check mark.

2. Remove the toolbars permanently by navigating the "Start" menu and selecting the "Control Panel." Then click "Add or Remove Programs." Select the toolbars you want to remove and uninstall each one.

3. If the toolbar that you want to remove isn't displayed on the "Add and Remove Programs" dialog, then search for the toolbars using the Search panel in the top corner of the Control Panel screen. Search for the name of the toolbar and access its parent file. From here you can usually manually uninstall the toolbar without affecting the software it came with. Some toolbars won't show up on the "Add and Remove Programs" dialog, as they are installed as part of other applications under a different name.

4. To stop toolbars from being installed in the future, always be sure to play attention when installing any programs. During the installation, there should be a screen listing the components you are installing. This menu usually includes a shortcut, toolbar and the software itself. Deselect the toolbar option and the toolbar won't be installed along with the rest of the program.

Housebreaking A Dog When You Live In An Apartment

Housebreaking puppies in an apartment setting can be a challenge.

Trying to housebreak a new puppy in an apartment can be a concern for new puppy owners. If you live in an apartment building on the second or third floor, it gets harder to get the puppy out the door in time to prevent accidents. Puppy training will take place in apartments if you keep a consistent training method and schedule. Pick one particular style to use to potty train your puppy in your apartment and it will be easier on both you and the puppy for it to become housebroken.

Instructions

1. Many people use newspaper to help housebreak puppies.

Decide if you will use a potty pad or newspaper to train the puppy to go to the bathroom in one spot in the house. This is usually the first step that apartment owners take because apartment dogs find it easier to go in one particular spot, rather than the owner trying to rush the dog outside. Try to stick to either pads or newspaper so as not to confuse the puppy.

2. Place the paper or the puppy pad where you want the puppy to go to the bathroom. Do not place it next to the puppy's food dish because dogs do not like going to the bathroom where they eat. Put in on an area that does not have carpets so that cleanup is easier.

3. Set a potty schedule for the puppy. Every two hours put the puppy on the pad or paper and encourage it to go to the bathroom. Praise the puppy when it does go to the bathroom and reward it with a treat.

4. Use one phrase of words when you are housebreaking the puppy. This will keep the puppy from becoming confused. An example of this is to tell the puppy to "Go ahead and go potty" or "Go piddle."

5. Ignore any bad potty behavior, or simply move the puppy from where it is going to the puppy pads or paper. Punishing a puppy will only make the puppy afraid of you and will not encourage the puppy to trust you.

6. Start training the puppy to go outside by taking a piece of the used paper or pad outside with you and setting it on the ground. This will let the puppy know that it is okay to go outside, especially if the puppy has not been outside much.

Alternatively, you can teach a small apartment dog to do its business in a litter box. Put the newspaper or pad that the dog normally uses to go to the bathroom into the litter box and then place the puppy in the litter box also. This is especially good for apartments that are on upper floors because young dogs may not always make it outdoors before they have to go.

Fourteen-year-olds can work in many job industries, but the type of work they can do is limited to nonhazardous activities such as in amusement centers, hotels and bakeries. Kids must have a work permit and only work the hours allowed for 14-year-olds by the Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Standards and Fair Labor Standards Act.

Work Schedule

Children who are 14 years old can work between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. no more than six days in a row for one week during the school year. During summer when school is out, kids can work until 9 p.m., but no later. They cannot work more than three hours day and no more than 18 hours a week during the school year. During the summer, they can work eight hours a day and only 40 hours a week.

Sign Waver

A 14-year-old can work as a sign waver if the job is directly in front of the business employing the child. If the job requires the person to walk around, leaving the front of the business, a 14-year-old child cannot perform this type of work.

Gas Station

A 14-year-old child can perform jobs at a gas station pumping gas and washing car windows. However, he cannot cashier or work in the garage or car wash on the premises. Fourteen-year-olds must be under the supervision of an adult who is on the premises.

Newspaper Carrier

Newspaper carriers must be 14 years old or older. Some newspaper companies may have restrictions of their own for carriers, but many newspapers employee 14-year-olds for morning, afternoon and weekend paper delivery. Newspaper carriers are not subject to the child labor laws set forth by the Fair Labor Standards Act and can work outside of the set time limits because some newspapers must be delivered before 7 a.m.

Babysitting

Fourteen-year-olds can obtain employment as babysitters. Although no special training is needed, many organizations have local babysitting classes available for young people who want a babysitting certificate saying that they have taken and passed the babysitting class. The class teaches what to do in an emergency, what telephone numbers to have available and perform CPR.

Farm Help

Someone who is 14 years old can work on a farm, but the job duties are limited. She can clean out stables and feed livestock by hand. Kids this age cannot drive tractors or operate heavy machinery or feed machinery. They cannot work in pens or stables with cows that have a new calf, stud horses, bulls or sows with piglets. These guidelines do not pertain to children employed by their parents on a farm.

Birth certificates are issued to newborns in the State of New Mexico once their parents send the application for a birth certificate to the state Health Department. Over the years, birth certificates have a way of becoming lost or misplaced, which is why the New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) makes it easy to obtain a new copy should you require one. The New Mexico DOH offers several ways you can obtain a new copy of your birth certificate.

Instructions

In Person

1. Visit one of the New Mexico Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics offices to apply for a birth certificate in person. Fill out the application provided and return it to the clerk. Office hours at the Santa Fe offices are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Albuquerque office from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

2. Provide the office clerk with a copy of your photo identification. Copies of birth certificates are only issued if it is your certificate or the certificate of someone in your immediate family.

3. Pay for the copy of your birth certificate. As of 2010, the fee per certificate is $10, payable by cash, check or credit card. Your birth certificate copy is given to you while you wait.

By Mail

4. Download a copy of the birth certificate application or compose a letter requesting a copy of the certificate (see Resources). Include the name listed on the certificate, date of birth, location of birth, parents' names, your relationship to the person listed on the certificate, the reason you need a copy of the certificate, your signature and your mailing address and contact information.

5. Write a check or money order payable to New Mexico Vital Records in the amount of $10. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

6. Mail your request, envelope and payment to:

1. Open an Internet web browser and type the address http://www.winxclub.com into the URL window. The site's homepage plays a short animated clip about the Winx Club fairies. On the left side of the screen there is a window where member can log in with their email addresses and passwords. Under that prompt a link reads "Sign up." Click on that link.

2. Read the fine print. The Winx Club Terms of Service will appear on your screen. This document basically informs the interested party that the information they provide, including their name, email address and any other volunteered data can be used by Rainbow Media at their discretion. It also includes a section warning parents to always monitor children when they are online to protect from third-party predators. Finally, Winx Club requires members who are under the age of 18 to have an adult's permission before registering. Once you have read the document thoroughly, click on the "Accept" button in the lower right-hand corner.

3. Fill out the registration form. The next page asks for the user's general information. This data includes a nickname, email address, password, the country you hail from, your gender, your age and a parent or guardian's email address. Fill in the text boxes with the corresponding information and click the button that reads "Next."

4. Access the Winx Club with an activation code that will automatically be sent to either your email address or the email address of the parent or guardian you provided. Check your email to retrieve your user name and activation code, which the email labels as a "password." There will also be a link to click to take you back to the Winx Club website where there will a prompt asking for your username and password. Once you type in that information and click "Sign in." General Medical and Surgical Hospitals

General medical and surgical hospitals offered an average salary of $44,740 to child, family and school social workers as of May 2009, reports the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Medical and public health social workers in this type of hospital earned an average of $53,730, and mental health and substance abuse social workers earned an average of $49,830. Social work administrators and researchers working in general medical and surgical hospitals earned an average income of $58,260.

Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Hospitals

Child, family and school social workers employed in psychiatric and substance abuse hospitals earned an average salary of $47,770 as of 2009, reports the BLS. For social work administrators and researchers the average income in a psychiatric and substance abuse hospital was $51,510.

Specialty Hospitals

Specialty hospitals, such as those that focus on specific patients such as children or the elderly, offered an average salary of $47,340 to child, family and school social workers as of 2009, according to the bureau. Medical and public health social workers in specialty hospitals earned an average of $55,280, and mental health and substance abuse social workers in specialty hospitals earned an average of $36,920. For social work administrators and researchers, specialty hospitals offered an average salary of $57,640 annually.

Qualifications

The minimum educational requirement for social working positions is a bachelor's degree in social work, but many hospitals and health settings require a master's degree, due to the fact that social workers in these types of facilities often perform clinical work. Licensure is also required but varies from state to state, although obtaining a license typically requires two years of supervised clinical experience for hospital social workers.

The Maltese is a very sweet, gentle and affectionate dog. The Maltese is a small dog usually weighing about 10 lbs. with a soft silky coat that does not shed very much. A Maltese is a great family pet; hardy enough to be around kids and they are great with other dogs. They are very lively and love to play with an energy level that is not off the charts. Here are training tips for your Maltese.

Instructions

1. Crate train your Maltese. A Maltese can sometimes be difficult to house train. This is a common problem with small dogs. A crate will help you with the house training process. A crate is also a safe place for your Maltese when you are not around. A Maltese puppy, like any puppy, will find objects to chew on and this can be a problem when you are not around.

With your Maltese in a crate you can relax knowing that your Maltese is safely confined to the crate. Crate training should be done using positive methods. You can fill a Kong toy and put it in the crate, you can toss treats and toys into the crate, anything that your Maltese likes. You want your puppy to make a strong positive association with the crate.

2. Establish some leadership. A Maltese is just like any other dog and responds to boundaries. Being a social animal, your Maltese needs to understand that you are the leader. Establishing leadership is not done with harsh or rough methods. The best way to establish leadership is by controlling the activities that are important to your Maltese.

3. Use treats and reinforce positive behavior. A Maltese tends to have a good appetite and they get excited around toys. Your Maltese should understand sit, stand, stay, come, down and walk politely on a leash.

Even though a Maltese is a lively and hardy little dog, you do not have to use harsh training methods. In fact, due to their size a choke collar can do permanent damage to the neck.

4. Socialize your Maltese puppy. If you get your Maltese as a puppy, bring your puppy with you to as many places as possible. Expose your puppy to other dog-friendly dogs, people, places and sounds. Proper socialization will help your Maltese puppy to become a calm, stable adult dog.

5. Groom your Maltese regularly. Start right away getting your Maltese used to brushing, bathing, ear cleaning, cleaning around the eyes and nail trimming. Start by doing short sessions and reward your Maltese for accepting the brushing--again we want your Maltese to associate grooming as a positive activity.

6. Avoid picking up your Maltese when he is scared. We tend to pick up dogs and coo and coddle them when they are scared. Again, this reinforces the scared feelings and makes these feelings stronger. Over time it will become more and more difficult for the dog to handle loud noises.

Remove Tear Stains From A Shih Tzu

Control your Shih Tzu's tear stains.

Your Shih Tzu might have a problem very common to roughly one-quarter of all small dog breeds: excessive tear staining, or a reddish-brown, rust-looking discharge that stains the hair under the eyes. Tear stains are most obvious on white and light colored coats and can be indicative of an underlying health, grooming or genetic issue. Fortunately, there are several things Shih Tzu owners can do to bring their dogs unsightly tear staining under control.

Instructions

1. Check your dog's food bag ingredients. Remove from the diet any food that might contribute to the color of the stain, such as beet pulp or food colorings.

2. Moisten a cotton swab or ball with water to soften and remove matter under the eyes.

3. Gently massage your dog from the bridge of its nose to underneath the eyes to help open up blocked tear ducts. Repeat this motion once or twice a day for a one-week period, then reduce to once or twice per week.

4. Trim the hair that is surrounding the eye to prevent it from irritating the eye.

5. Check for fleas around the eye area, as fleas can cause eye irritation and discharge. Use a flea medication on the dog if fleas are present.

6. Reduce the mineral content in the dog's water by providing it with filtered drinking water.

7. Add a small amount of vinegar to the dog's water to change the pH balance in your dog's system.

8. Observe the dog for a yeast infection, which can produce increased tearing. Yeast infection symptoms include discharge and itching. Take your dog to the veterinarian if you suspect it has a yeast infection. Ask your vet to advise you the course of treatment for yeast infections and then follow his or her directions.

9. Exercise extreme caution and apply a small amount of corn starch below the eye with a small brush or finger, taking care to avoid the dog's eyes and mouth.

The Nintendo DS is a hand-held gaming console. One of the features of the Nintendo DS is that it has built-in wireless capability. The Nintendo DS can connect to almost any available wireless network. However, if you have a computer but don't have a wireless network, one of the alternatives you have is a Nintendo Wi-Fi USB connector, which automatically connects the DS to Nintendo Wi-Fi.

Instructions

1. Insert the installation CD into the computer's CD drive to activate the installer.

2. Follow the prompts that appear to install the software needed for the DS adapter.

3. Connect the DS adapter into the USB port on your computer

4. Insert a DS game with "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection" on it into the DS and turn it on.

5. Tap the game icon at the main screen with your stylus to activate the game.

6. Tap the "Options" setting and go to "Wireless Settings."

7. Tap the "Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Controller" button to connect to the USB adapter you installed.

Instructions

1. Follow the instructions, if provided. The instructions for letters of recommendation or honor might be included in the application or formatting guidelines. Instructions

1. Contact the financial advisor or insurance company that is servicing the annuity for you. If you are able to make an appointment, you will probably save yourself some time. 2. Determine if the annuity is qualified or non-qualified. Qualified annuities are IRAs where non-qualified are supplemental programs. 5. Fill out the surrender form, sign and date it. Be sure to mark whether you are doing a partial surrender or a complete surrender. You should also be able to request whether or not taxes are to be withheld from the distribution.

6. Turn the policy in with a full surrender. Partial surrenders don't require this. You should have a check within two weeks.

Outside Exercise

A Shih Tzu can be walked or taken for a short run around your neighborhood. You can also leave the Shih Tzu in your yard, if you have one, for around 15 minutes for it to play on its own, although puppies should be supervised. If there is extreme hot or cold weather, observe the puppy carefully to make sure it is not too cold or hot.

Inside Exercise

You can play short games with your puppy inside if the weather does not permit outside exercise. Hide a treat in your house somewhere and get your dog excited to look for it. Or, you can give your dog an ice cube, which will occupy it for some time.

Considerations

A Shih Tzu puppy is happy both in an apartment or an outdoor setting; Shih Tzus are adaptable dogs. Since they were bred to be lapdogs, they do not need as much exercise, as, say, a golden retriever or another larger dog. You should aim for around a half hour to an hour of exercise for your puppy each day.

3. Choose the Neopet whose page you want to edit. Click the button beneath the image that says "Edit."

Getting Started

When the pet is first born, its hunger meter will be low, so you should feed it right away. Too many snacks are bad for your pet, though, so be sure not to overfeed it.

Raising Your Pet

Once your nano pet is born and fed, you are ready to begin the game. You will monitor your pet's happiness, hunger, discipline and health, trying to maintain high levels in each section.

To ensure your pet's happiness, you can play various games with it. These are different for the puppy and the kitten. Nano kittens can play peek-a-boo and chase the mouse, while puppies can play shaking hands and chase the ball. Games can be found by selecting the "Game" icon and choosing your game. Play with your pet often enough that its happiness meter stays high, but don't tire it out by playing too frequently.

If your pet's health meter is low, it could be because its environment is too dirty or because it is sick. If you see paw prints or a pile of waste on the screen, your pet's home needs to be cleaned. You can do this by selecting the "Clean" icon.

If your pet is sick, you will need to give it medicine by selecting the "Medicine" icon. You can tell your pet is sick by a picture of a skull or if it won't eat when it is hungry.

Discipline

It is important to discipline your pet, which can be done by selecting the "Discipline" icon. Be sure to check your pet's health icon before disciplining it, as it may be misbehaving because it is unhappy or sick.

At the end of your pet's day, be sure to turn out the lights so it can sleep.

Kidney Problems in Greyhounds

Most veterinarians diagnose kidney problems when blood tests show high levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine. The problem for greyhounds is that they naturally have higher levels of BUN and creatinine in their blood, so if your veterinarian diagnoses kidney insufficiency and your greyhound hasn't shown any signs of kidney trouble, you may want to get a second opinion.

Diet Components

Greyhounds with kidney insufficiency need a diet lower in protein than healthy dogs; however, the protein provided should be of the highest nutritional quality possible. Restricting protein in your greyhound's diet will also help you to restrict phosphorus, which vets recommend limiting for greyhounds with kidney problems.

To help restrict the amount of phosphorus your greyhound gets in its diet, some vets recommend phosphorus "binders" like calcium carbonate. Unflavored antacids are usually safe for greyhounds and are a good source of calcium carbonate, but you should talk to your veterinarian before administering any over-the-counter medications to your greyhound.

According to Vet Info, omega 3 fatty acids may protect already damaged kidneys from further damage. However, greyhounds with insufficient kidneys should not consume excessive amounts of omega 6 fatty acids, because these could further damage the kidneys. A good source of omega 3 fatty acids is fish oil, which can be found in supplement form.

The 2nd Chance website suggests that diets high in fiber may allow some unfiltered waste buildup to be filtered through the large intestine.

Greyhounds with kidney problems sometimes lose their appetites, so if your greyhound refuses to eat, try increasing its intake of B vitamins, which are appetite stimulants.

Foods

Perhaps the most important foods to avoid feeding a greyhound with insufficient kidneys are foods that are high in phosphorus. Foods high in phosphorus include meat, poultry, fish, dairy, peas and beans. In order to decrease the amount of phosphorus in the diet, it is safe to limit the amount of protein the dog eats; however, remember that cooked egg whites are a complete protein source and yet they are very low in phosphorus.

If you are interested in increasing the amount of fiber in your greyhound's diet, try feeding limited amounts of oatmeal (as long as it doesn't contain cow's milk, garlic or onion), carrots or canned pumpkin.

If you are worried that your greyhound's new diet limitations may cut out the essential vitamins it needs, talk to your vet about supplementation with a multivitamin.

If you do not want to feed your dog any homemade foods, formulated foods are suitable for greyhounds with kidney problems. Talk to your veterinarian about which brands are safe for your dog.

Independent Adoption Laws In Texas

Independent adoption are permitted in Texas.

Independent adoptions, also known as private adoptions, are child placements that individual families and their attorneys facilitate themselves. These adoptions do not rely on the assistance of third-party child placement agencies. According to Adoptions.com, independent adoptions are legal in most U.S. states, including Texas. Nonetheless, Texas places restrictions on how families may make independent adoption plans. Both the Texas Penal Code and Texas Family Code outline these regulations.

Advertising

Under Texas Penal Code Section 25.09, birth parents may not place advertisements in public media, such as in newspapers, television or the Internet stating they have a child they wish to place for adoption. Likewise, prospective adoptive parents may not place any public advertisements stating they are looking for a child to adopt. Word-of-mouth advertisement is legal and acceptable for both birth families and prospective adoptive parents.

Payments

Texas Penal Code Section 25.08(a)-(b) prohibits birth parents from taking money or property from prospective adoptive parents in exchange for their child. Adoptive families may provide the birth mother with monies related to her pregnancy and the adoption, however. Specifically, Texas law allows birth mothers to accept money for medical expenses related to the pregnancy and childbirth, as well as attorney fees related to the adoption. Prospective adoptive parents may also reimburse the birth mother and father for the cost of pre-adoption counseling services provided by a licensed social worker or mental health professional.

Disclosures

Section 162.025 of the Texas Family Code says only adoptive or natural parents may place a child with a new family through independent adoption. Texas law mandates that the placing family or birth family provide the new adoptive parents with physical descriptions of themselves and their family members. They must also produce a comprehensive health history that discloses their ethnic background and nationality, as well as their educational, religious, professional and criminal backgrounds.

Under Texas Family Code Section 162.0070, the adoptive family is also entitled to receive background information on the child, including her health status, birth records and immunization, social and educational history.

Qualifications for Adoption

To qualify for an independent adoption in Texas, prospective adoptive families must pass a home study that meets the regulations set forth by the Board of Protective and Regulatory Services, pursuant to Section 107.0511 of the Texas Family Code. Under this statute, a social worker must also complete a post-placement visitation and file a report with the court before the judge may finalize the independent adoption.

History

German shepherds were first bred and raised in Germany by Max von Stephanitz. The first approved German shepherd was presented in 1899. Hungary maintains its own German shepherd breeding program, where breeders maintain specific lines of German shepherds that are protected in and kept to the country.

Features

German shepherds are large and well muscled, with coarse coats that range from brown or black to a combination of brown, white and black. Ideal height is 24 to 26 inches in males and 22 to 24 inches in females. Healthy dogs can weigh up to 85 pounds.

Personalities

According to Max von Stephanitz, the creator of the breed, a German shepherd should have a "firmness of nerves, attentiveness, unshockability, tractability, watchfulness, reliability and incorruptibility together with courage, fighting tenacity and hardness." These characteristics make German shepherds ideal candidates for training and service.

Training

Training Hungarian German shepherds is a relatively straightforward experience, given the intelligence and willingness of these dogs. Training is usually started when a dog is young, smaller and more docile. German shepherds who are destined to become police or service dogs require training that includes obedience and attack commands, bomb and drug sniffing, and rescue work training. For German shepherds destined to be pets, training should include obedience commands and standard behavioral training.

Uses

German shepherds are commonly used in performance and working capacities. They are a favored breed for police dog work, due to their natural aggression and trainability. They also serve as seeing eye dogs and aides for the handicapped and as search and rescue dogs.
