Recognized Varieties

According to the "Tea Cup Statement" of the Chihuahua Club of America, only two varieties of Chihuahua, the long-coated and the short-coated, are considered "legitimate." Canine Seizure Remedy

Seizures, or episodes of uncontrolled movement, may be localized in one area of the body or generalized. Usually each episode is brief, lasting less than 30 minutes. Rarely, a seizure can last up to an hour. Your dog may have only one seizure or have them repeatedly. Regardless of the severity or frequency, your vet must find the right canine seizure remedy.

Causes

Since another condition may cause canine seizures, the remedy will hinge on treating that cause. A treated brain injury, tumor or infection may cure the seizures. The remedy for existing liver failure, kidney failure or electrolyte imbalance may also cure the seizures. Some dog breeds and older dogs are more apt to have seizures. If he finds no other cause, your vet will treat your dog for idiopathic epilepsy, the most common cause of canine seizures, according to Dr. Gary Roznick, DVM, in "Idiopathic Canine Epilepsy."

Potassium bromide may cause vomiting and depression. According to the Canadian Veterinary Journal, pancreatitis may be a serious adverse effect of potassium bromide combined with phenobarbital. Clorazepate and Keppra both bring on staggering and drowsiness. Felbamate can severely damage the liver.

Alternative Canine Seizure Remedies

Acupuncture and other traditional remedies have shown some success in treating difficult cases of canine seizures. Vitamin therapies are being evaluated, as some vitamin deficiencies cause seizures in people. Several remedies are advertised on the Internet. Although they may help with calming your dog or provide nutritional supplements, they do not take the place of your veterinarian's advice.

During and After a Seizure

During a canine seizure, keep your dog safe. Because he does not know what he is doing, keep your hands, other pets and children away. Keep the room quiet and wait until the seizure is finished. When the canine seizure subsides, your dog may seem perfectly normal. More often, though, he will be restless and disoriented. Other symptoms may include extreme hunger, pacing or even blindness. This may last for only an hour or for several hours. About the only remedy you can offer during this time is to keep your dog calm and offer small quantities of food and water. The food may help restore blood sugar levels. If this is the first seizure, take your dog to the vet as soon as possible.

Vaccination Requirements For Pets To Be Brought Into Hawaii

Bringing your pet to Hawaii with you involves careful planning. Schedule veterinary visits well in advance and make sure you have all necessary documentation so that your pet does not spend the entire time in quarantine.

Significance

Infectious diseases such as rabies spread rapidly and could have disastrous effects on Hawaii's small islands. The state government requires vaccinations for all dogs and cats entering Hawaii in order to prevent this. Hawaii offers a direct release program at the airport or short quarantines of five days or less for pets that meet all requirements.

Types

Visiting Hawaii requires a rabies vaccination for your dog or cat. If your dog is older than three months, he also needs vaccinations for distemper, infectious hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza virus and leptospirosis. Consider vaccinating your dog for bordetella bronchiseptica, or kennel cough, and coronoavirus as well, although these are not required. If your cat is at least three months old, she also needs vaccinations for panleukopenia virus, viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and chlamydia psittaci. A feline leukemia vaccine provides her with additional protection, but is not required. Follow a regular vaccination schedule recommended by your vet if your puppy or kitten is under three months old.

Additional requirements

Your dog or cat must pass the OIE-FAVN Rabies Blood Test before arriving in Hawaii, in addition to having current vaccinations. Send a blood sample to the DOD Food Analysis and Diagnostic Laboratory in Texas or Kansas State University for testing. Your pet also needs a microchip, if she does not have one already.

Timeframe

Avoiding long quarantines requires your pet to have current vaccinations and recent blood samples. Have your pet vaccinated for rabies at least 90 days or more before your arrival in Hawaii. Have all other vaccinations given at least 10 days before your arrival. Send your pet's OIE-FAVN Rabies Blood Test sample in early enough so that the lab receives it at least 120 days before your arrival, but do not send one in if it is more than three years old. For puppies and kittens, wait until they are at least 10 months old so that they meet all the requirements.

Exemptions

If you're arriving on a direct flight from the United Kingdom, Guam, New Zealand or Australia, your pet will not be quarantined as long as he is free of parasites and disease. Bring the proper documentation, including a health certificate from your veterinarian and a signed affidavit swearing that your pet did not leave the country of origin during the six months before your departure. You must also present a signed affidavit from the aircraft captain or senior station official confirming that your pet was only on one plane.

Warning

Failing to provide the necessary paperwork or meet the requirements for either direct release or the five-day-or-less program when you arrive at Honolulu International Airport will cost you up to $1080. Your pet will be held in quarantine for up to 120 days at your expense.

A wolf spider can be very large in size.

There are many different types of spider species in Pennsylvania and some of the most common people see are wolf spiders. There are two main varieties of wolf spiders found in the state, and they are pretty easy to identify. They can be found around yards and even in people's homes.

General Information

There are 13 different types of wolf spiders found in the U.S. The genus Hogna contains numerous types of wolf spider species, including the ones most likely found in Pennsylvania. Of the different types, H. carolinesis and H. aspera, are the two largest and most commonly found wolf spider species in Pennsylvania.

Physical Description

H. carolinesis female wolf spiders are 22 to 35 millimeters in length, while males are 18 to 20 millimeters in length. The body is mostly dark brown. It also has scattered gray hair that are not arranged in any special pattern. The legs will be a similar solid color. There is a darker dorsal stripe that appears on the abdomen. H. aspera female wolf spiders are 18 to 25 millimeters in length, while the males are 16 to 18 millimeters. They have similar brown body color when compared to the H. carolinesis species. However, they do have a yellow line of hairs on the upper abdomen near the eyes. The females are also much darker in color than the males.

Habbitat and Breeding

All Pennsylvania wolf spiders will live in similar habitats. They normally build tunnels in the ground, under rocks, in between boards, in firewood bundles, under siding or any other place that provides good protection. They are considered to be a hunting spider, so they will only appear at night when hunting prey. May or June is when egg cocoons are created and June or July will be when they are hatched. It is not uncommon to see mother spiders carrying baby spiders on their back during the summer months.

Medical Implications

Wolf spiders can bight if they are picked up or are trapped next to a person's skin. The venom is not poisonous or very harmful to humans. This is good, because of their large size, if their venom was more potent they would be a very dangerous spider. Initial pain and redness are the two most serious symptoms that occur after a bite. No serious medical reactions have been recorded yet from a wolf spider bite in Pennsylvania.

1. Note that Japan offers two types of adoption. In a "regular" adoption, the Japanese child retains ties with their birth family, and may still receive inheritances from them and retain other privileges. A "special" adoption negates the child's relationship with their biological family.

2. Consider the basic requirements for adoptive parents. At least one prospective parent must travel to Japan to initiate proceedings. You'll need to file an adoption petition for a child under six years of age, and deal with the Family Court located in the city where the child resides. Japan allows single adoptive parents if approved by authorities.

3. Scrutinize any Japanese adoption agency carefully. Japan doesn't require agencies or attorneys for an American to adopt a child. The United States Embassy in Tokyo has a list of established agencies and attorneys if you want to use one.

4. Review eligible adoptive children. Japanese children of adoptive status, usually abandoned, born to an unmarried woman, orphaned or released by their parents or legal guardian, fall under the authority of the Family Court's Child Guidance Center in their jurisdiction. A surviving biological parent must sign a statement of release to allow an adoption to move forward.

5. Secure the child's legal paperwork. Contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to arrange a passport for your adoptive son or daughter. Enter the adoption in the country's Family Register if one of the adoptive parents was born in Japan. The final court decree will notate the child's biological and adoptive families.

Keep in mind that one of the accounts must have been created in the past 30 days and, when merged, the pet on the younger account will be cleared of all stats, items and money--just as if it were being readopted from the beginning.

2. Enter the requested information into the boxes. This includes username, secret code, name, birthday, email address and pet type.

How Was Cherokee Clothing Made

Deer hide was often used for making clothes

Cherokee people fashioned their clothing from animal byproducts before their introduction to the white man. They believed that once they sacrificed an animal for their needs, they were responsible not to waste any part of it. They learned that not only was an animal good for food, but it could also provide clothing and shelter. Therefore, the skins of animals were used to produce tents, moccasins and clothing for all seasons.

Clothing

Cherokee men wore breech-cloths and fringed buckskin leggings in the summer. In the winter, they added shirts, fur robes and hats to stay warm.

Women wore deerskin in the form of below-the-knee length wrap-around skirts and added longer skirts and robes in the wintertime. Shirts were also made with skins and sometimes adorned with turkey feathers.

Children approaching puberty also wore traditional Cherokee dress.

Materials

Deerskin was the primary material used for making Cherokee clothing. However, fur robes and moccasins were often made of beaver or muskrat skin, with the fur on the inside to keep the feet warm. Other natural materials used were woven mulberry bark or other types of fiber and turkey feathers.

Process

Cherokee clothing was hand sewn with strips of hide or with thread made from the sinews or tendons of a deer. Sometimes plant fibers would also be used. Sewing needles were made from animal bone.

Skins were tanned before their use. Flat stones, a water process and the sun were used to process the hides.

Clothing was not made by using patterns but by imitation.

Accessories

Cherokee women often wore a deer-hide scarf around the neck and tucked into the top of the dress. Buckskin belts, brightly colored embroidered moccasins and jewelry made of animal bones and teeth completed her ensemble.

Men wore turbans and armbands and sported tattoos and painted their faces for adornment. They also wore moccasins.

Both men and women wore clothing with dyed porcupine quills, shell beads, stone disks and animal hair for decoration.

Tear Dress

The Cherokee Nation is the only tribe to legislate a specific style of clothing as the official tribal dress. The Cherokee Tear Dress is the official tribal dress for women. The dress was designed after the Cherokee learned about making colorful fabrics from white settlers.

It was made from shapes of squares and rectangles, each torn across the grain of the fabric, not cut with scissors. The dress was shirtwaist style.

The American with Disabilities Act of 1990 defines a service dog (or any trainable animal for that matter) as one that is "individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability." Furthermore, the ADA decreed that national registration and certification is not required for service dogs that, under the law, can accompany their owners into any business or organization open to the public. A service dog must be able to help his or her owner complete various tasks, and be well-behaved in public.

Instructions

1. Determine whether you qualify as having a disability, as defined by the ADA: a person who "has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities."

2. Train your dog to perform at least two tasks to help you overcome your disability. There are no federally designated guidelines for training a service animal; in fact, many owners train their own dogs, as there are numerous resources available to this end. However, some states require that the dog is trained by a professional trainer or expert, or demand that all service animals pass a certification exam.

3. Consider registering your dog with a recognized organization, like the National Service Animal Registry (NSAR). Physical Differences

The most obvious difference between the German-bred Shepherd and the American concerns the dog's stance. While German Shepherds of German lines have a straight back, the American German Shepherd's back has a downward slope and sharply angled hip joints. These traits make the American dog look longer and allow for the "flowing gait" that is often praised in the American show ring. They differ in color and size as well, with German-bred Shepherds tending to be larger and darker than the American lines.

Temperament Differences

Overall, both American and German-bred Shepherds have good temperament, and depending upon their obedience training, can be great family dogs. The German-bred Shepherds, bred more as a working dog, may appear less social and are sometimes wary of strangers. Its American counterpart-bred are more often used as show dogs.

Breed Registration

In order for a German Shepherd to be registered in Germany, it must pass specific breed criteria as defined by a governing board. These evaluations include herding and endurance performance, as well as physical structure evaluations. There are a number of actions you can take to discover if a company is a legitimate business.

Instructions

1. Perform an Internet search on a major search engine (like Google, Yahoo!, or MSN) to determine if a company is a scam. Type in the company's full name then the word "Scam" into the search engine box. This will bring up any information from former customers or websites warning potential customers of the service.

2. Check the company out on a complaint website (see "Resources" for an example). These websites allow customers to submit complaints about a company, then allow the business to reply to the complaint. If a company has a series of similar complaints suggesting that it may be a scam with no replies from the business, consider that a red flag.

3. Do a search on the Better Business Bureau's (BBB) website. If the company has a rating of D or F, with little or no replies from the business to the BBB regarding complaints, it could be a scam.

4. Call your state's attorney general office to ask if anyone has filed a complaint against the company. Inquire about the nature of the complaint--try to find out if it was resolved satisfactorily or if there is legal action pending.

5. Call the chamber of commerce in the business's locality to assure that it's a registered, valid business. If a door-to-door salesman visits your home, contact your local police department or town administration office to assure that he has proper permits to sell services and products in this manner.
