Starting A Dog Daycare In Maine

If you have a passion for dogs, consider starting a dog daycare.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, as of December 2009, 39 percent of US households are dog owners. If you love dogs, service the large demographic of pet owners who are either too busy to play with their pets regularly and are in need of a daycare service or who are traveling and in need of overnight or boarding care.

Instructions

1. Conduct research to determine if there is a current hole in the market that your daycare could fill. If local competition exists, ensure that the market is large enough to handle two daycare facilities. Use the US Census Bureau and the American Veterinary Medical Association’s pet calculator to help you determine the size of the market.

2. Identify ways in which to compete, such as by offering obedience and socialization classes, offering grooming services and in-home daycare services or by implementing a clever theme for your dog daycare. Visit local kennels to generate ideas. Develop a business plan, identifying how you intend to grab your target market, your business vision, potential obstacles, anticipated expenses and your marketing strategy.

3. Secure a commercial facility within your service radius. Ideal space may be one situated near an airport or near a residential community that is particularly dog friendly and isn’t currently being serviced with a dog daycare. Look for a spacious facility with a large outdoor fenced area where the dogs can get plenty of exercise.

4. Learn the animal welfare laws for Maine, such as the fact that you can house 10 animals at one time. Then develop protocols for vaccination requirements, cleaning the kennels, flea treatment requirements, quarantining sick dogs and an exercise program. You’ll need to include these on your license application.

5. Purchase cages, toys, bedding, bowls, snacks, office equipment, cleaning supplies, trash bags, leashes and food storage containers. Hire a groomer, daycare manager, handler and administrative assistant, as needed. Keep costs down by hiring one or two junior handlers on a part-time basis.

6. Visit the Maine Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources to apply for your boarding kennel license. As of 2010, you will need to submit $25 for each owner and a $75 licensing fee with your application. You’ll also need to have your facility inspected.

7. Purchase a website for your dog daycare. List your rates for daycare and boarding, policies, age requirements, regular and holiday, reservation policy, facility information and classes on your site. Include flea treatment requirements, snacks offered, pick-up and drop-off times and preparation tips.

8. Gain visibility by advertising at dog parks and hosting or participating in dog-friendly events. Consider donating a portion of your income to rescue shelters. Contact other dog-friendly businesses such as bakeries, pet stores, grooming facilities and kennels in adjacent towns about exchanging advertising in order to reel in more clientele for both parties.

Foster A Horse

Author and her foster horse, Pumpkin

Horse rescues need foster homes to help rehabilitate, house and handle needy horses, donkeys and mules. Fostering is a wonderful way to help horses and learn more about handling, care and training.

Instructions

1. Locate a rescue near you. Ask your vet and other equine professionals for recommendations, look in the phone book, and look on the internet.

2. Once you've found a rescue, contact them and ask for a copy of their fostering policy, fostering application and fostering contract. Ask how they select foster homes and ask about their requirements for fostering.

3. Review the policy, application and contract and ask the rescue any questions.

4. Each rescue operates differently. Ask the rescue what expenses they reimburse, how they make reimbursements, and whether the expenses need to be pre-approved.

5. If you want to donate the cost of fostering (any fostering supplies you purchase), you need to foster for a 501c3 rescue. Ask the rescue for a copy of their IRS Determination letter, this grants the rescue 501c3 status.

6. Ask to talk to current foster homes. Ask them about their experience.

7. Decide what type of horses (or mules or donkeys) you can foster. Some people aren't comfortable with stallions or don't have facilities appropriate for them. Others are good at rehabilitating starved horses, and some people need easy to handle horses with no behavioral problems. Be honest about your skills, facilities and abilities so the rescue can send you appropriate horses.

8. Complete the application process.

9. Once you approved to foster, talk to the rescue about getting your first foster horse. Enjoy the experience!

Care For A Jones Armadillo Lizard

The Jones Armadillo lizard is one of the few lizards who functions in social groups. Generally docile, they will hide if threatened and if there is no hiding spot available they bite their tail and roll into a ball very similar to an armadillo. The lizard usually lives 10 years and only grows to a length of 6 inches, so it is a great choice for a pet.

Instructions

1. Obtain an appropriately sized aquarium for your lizard. A 20 gallon tank will work for up to three lizards. The enclosure should be covered with a screen lid.

2. Cover the bottom of your lizard's new home with a substrate like sand, mulch or bark.

3. Light the cage with a full spectrum reptile bulb so that your lizard can properly synthesize calcium and other minerals.

4. Provide a thermal gradient inside the enclosure. Most of the enclosure should average 80 degrees Fahrenheit and there should be a basking area with a heat lamp set to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

5. Use a small shallow bowl for water. Fill the bowl with clean, non-chlorinated water daily and wash the bowl every week.

6. Place a hiding rock inside the aquarium as well as a few other decorations of your liking.

7. Feed your Jones Armadillo lizard feeder insects from your local pet store. Crickets and meal worms make a great meal for your lizard.

8. Clean the substrate daily of droppings and change it once every week.

Care For A Puppy Mill Dog

Dogs that come from puppy mills often come with special needs because of the way they were treated before they were purchased. They are often kept in poor conditions and might have been kept in a small, cramped cage with many other dogs through most of the dog's life. This means an adjustment period might be needed to get the dog used to interaction with humans.

Instructions

1. Handle your new dog sparingly until he gets used to the interaction with you. In the puppy mill, your dog might have had little if any human interaction. He might feel more comfortable with being left alone for a few days to become accustomed to life outside a cage before you begin handling him a lot.

2. Give your new dog an area in your home that is just for him. This can be a corner of a room that he can call his own, a chair that only he sits on or another quiet, safe place where he can get away from interacting with others. Many dogs from puppy mills need this space to help them adjust to their new home.

3. Use positive reinforcement when potty training or training your dog to avoid certain areas. The idea during your dog's adjustment period is to get him to interact positively to his new family and surroundings. Negative reinforcement such as scolding or spanking may cause him to become afraid of his new surroundings. Use treats to reward him for good behavior instead of punishing for bad behavior.

4. Provide a crate for your new dog if he is too fearful to interact with you. Having a place that reminds him of his cage can make him feel more comfortable. This can allow him a slower integration into your family, as he decides when to leave his crate each day and for how long. Dogs that were mistreated often need this space away from humans in order to feel safe.

5. Keep your patience in your dog's first few weeks with you. He might not understand do simple things like climb stairs because of his confinement at the puppy mill. With your guidance and patience, he will slowly learn navigate his new world.

Poisonous Spiders Found In Indiana

Poisonous Spiders Found in Indiana

The Midwestern United States is a relative safe zone from dangerous animals and poisonous creatures. However, the black widow and brown recluse spiders are poisonous, and frequently inhabit dark crevices of basements and storage areas throughout Indiana. There are certain characteristics to note when identifying these spiders, advisable precautions to take to avoid encountering them and helpful information for treat spider bites if you're bitten. Does this Spark an idea?

Black Widows and their Bites

Female black widows are black with a red hourglass mark on their undersides. These are the poisonous ones of the family, and the males are generally white or yellow striped. Bites may result in scabbing, reddening and slight swelling at the local tissue. Black widow bites can be slightly more severe, including the possibility of severe muscular pain, stiffness of the stomach and legs, difficulty breathing and nausea. If unattended, the after-effects can be extremely painful and more dangerous, particularly for children or the elderly.

Idenfiying Brown Recluses and their Bites

Brown recluses are originally from South America, and uncommon in all but the South and Midwestern America. They are a dowdy brown color, and according to the Washington State University Extension, "are known as fiddle-backed or violin spiders, as they have a dark violin pattern on the front portion of the body."

Bites by a brown recluse may result in a burning sensation, scabbing, reddening and swelling at the local tissue. One Indiana resident describes a long-unattended bite as "scarring" in an online "Bite Report."

Other Poisonous Spiders in the Midwest

The other main poisonous spiders in the United States are hobo spiders and tarantulas. Hobo spiders are slightly aggressive and dangerous, somewhat similar to the brown recluse, but these creatures are more common in the Northwestern United States. Tarantulas inhabit the South and Southwestern United States. Although not commonly identified in Indiana, they have been sighted.

Care and Precautions for Poisonous Spiders and Bites

Cleaning the bite with soap and water, and then covering with a cool compress, is a general treatment for spider bites, but you should consult a physician as soon as possible. Your doctor might recommend calcium gluconate.

Be careful around garage or basement clutter that spiders might inhabit, particularly wood piles and in dank, humid places. At night, be aware of bright lights that can attract insects, including predator spiders. Keep wood piles away from the house, eliminate clutter around your house, garage and lawn and ensure that you have tight-fitting screens on windows. Those precautions will discourage spiders from moving in.

Order Dog Vaccines Online

Order Dog Vaccines Online

As a responsible dog owner, you know it's your duty to keep your dog up-to-date on current vaccinations, but these trips to the vet's office can be costly. Vaccinating your dog at home can be a safe alternative--and cheaper and easier than you might think. First, however, you must obtain the vaccines. Follow these steps and you will soon be on your way to ordering your own dog vaccines online.

Instructions

1. Do your research. Make sure you know which vaccines are needed for your dog's breed and age. You need to know how much your dog weighs also. It might be a good idea to take your dog to the vet to get a general checkup and current weight before starting any vaccines.

2. Order from a reputable company. There are many companies online that sell dog vaccines, and some are much cheaper than others. One company that has a good reputation is Doctors Foster and Smith.

3. Allow time to receive the vaccines. Vaccines need to be given to dogs on a strict schedule, and you do not want to fall behind on your dog's doses. Also, make sure that you order enough vaccines. Many, such as the rattlesnake vaccine, require several shots.

4. Make sure you order all the necessary supplies. Not only will you need the actual vaccines, but a needle and syringe as well. In fact, needles and syringes should only be used once with each shot, so you will need to order multiple needles and syringes.

5. Once you have all your materials in place, go ahead and give your dog his vaccines in the comfort of your own home.

Facts On Cabbage Patch Kids

The Cabbage Patch Kids were a marketing hit that promoted the idea of dolls as adoption targets. Each Kid came with its own name, a birth certificate and adoption papers.

History

In 1978, Xavier Roberts, an artist and businessman from Georgia, created a doll that he first named "Little People." The Little People dolls were manufactured under the business name of Original Appalachian Artworks, Inc. In 1982 they became the Cabbage Patch Kids and the company name switched to Babyland General Hospital since it was housed in a former clinic.

Features

No two Cabbage Patch Kids are identical, but all of them have round, chubby faces made of plastic. Roberts' signature is located on the left buttock of the cloth body. Some variations of the doll feature synthetic hair instead of the yarn most of the originals have.

Fun Fact

In 1984, during the height of the Cabbage Patch Kid popularity, over 20 million dolls were adopted. By the end of the 20th century, 95 million dolls had been sold.

Size

The size of the standard Cabbage Patch Kid is 15 to 16 inches in length. There have been many variations of dolls through the years, including a "newborn" that measured 11 inches long.

Value

In 1984, the Cabbage Patch Kid doll retailed for $30, the same price new versions sold for in 2010. An original 1980s doll still in its box can be worth $100 or more.

Draw Up A Legal Contract

You can use contracts in a wide variety of situations.

A contract is a specific kind of agreement that is enforceable by law once entered into. Contracts must contain specific elements as required by state law before they are legally valid, and incorrectly drafting your own contract can lead to a court later determining it is unenforceable. While creating a simple contract is usually easy to do, you should always consult an attorney whenever you create a legal document or need legal advice.

Instructions

1. Begin with an opening paragraph. Most contracts start with a "preamble," a paragraph that states some very basic information. The preamble should identify each person or organization participating in the contract, known as parties, as well as the date at which the parties reach the agreement.

2. State the terms. The contract needs to specify what each party's responsibilities are in the agreement. For example, if you create a contract between a contractor and a homeowner to remove a tree, the contract should state what the contractor's obligations are (removing the tree) and what the homeowner's responsibilities are (paying the contractor the agreed upon fee).

3. Include signatures. Each party to the contract should sign and date the document at the end of the contract. The signature block should include space for a signature, a printed name and the signer's address and title or relationship to the contract. You can, but are not always required to, have your contract notarized by signing it in front of a licensed notary.

4. Provide copies. Whenever you enter into a contractual agreement, you should always give each party a copy of the original agreement so everyone can refer to it in the event of a future conflict or disagreement.

Take the first step to a fulfilling experience by rescuing a Maltese in Florida.

Instructions

1. Join a reputable rescue group in your area of Florida. There are many rescue groups that can aid in your rescue efforts. Decide which area of Florida you’d like to participate in your Maltese rescue. If you cannot find a specific Maltese rescue group in your area of Florida, you can join a rescue group for all breeds of dogs and specify your preference in the Maltese breed.

2. Be on a contact list from humane societies and vets. Let them know that you are interested in being a rescue contact for a Maltese in the area of Florida. Keep in mind that calls can come in at any time of the day or night if one should become available so be prepared to accept your rescued Maltese.

3. Make sure your family and home is ready for a Maltese at a moment’s notice. Have on hand the things you would need for any pet, including food, water bowls, toys and bedding. Your dog will be confused and most likely scared. Be sure to provide a calm and serene environment for the new arrival.

4. Know your limitations. A new dog can be a great responsibility and if you already have dogs, a family or other pets, rescuing a Maltese can add to that chaos. Be sure that you can provide a stable and friendly home in Florida. Your rescue Maltese has already been through a lot having been to different temporary homes. Make sure that your home is a loving environment and ready to accept a new arrival.

5. Keep in mind that your dog may have behavioral issues. A new dog can have problems with house training, barking and even medical problems. Ensure that you are ready to accept a Maltese with any of these problems. A rescue can be in need of a home due to any of these issues so keep that in mind when deciding to rescue a Maltese.

6. Be sure to take your name off of any contact lists if you decide to only rescue one Maltese in Florida. Another home in Florida may be in want of a rescue as well. It will make things easier on the proper contacts if you are not called unnecessarily. Be sure to notate any changes such as status of rescue availability, phone number, address and special situations.

Rescue A Maltese In California

The sweet Maltese makes a wonderful companion for apartment dwellers. The tiny dogs usually weigh between six and ten pounds and do not require a lot of exercise. Because of their delicate nature, a purebred Maltese may not do well in a family with young children. There are many adult purebred Maltese and Maltese mixes available for adoption or rescue in California.

Instructions

1. Consider whether a Maltese is the right breed for your family. They are small and delicate. Young children can harm the delicate Maltese completely by accident. If you want a dog to jog with then the Maltese is not for you. Maltese are usually great with other dogs. They are sweet natured and sensitive. Maltese require regular grooming. If you have never lived with a small dog, consider fostering a Maltese for a rescue group.

2. Talk with your veterinarian and other pet care professionals. Tell them that you are looking for a Maltese to rescue. It is possible that your groomer or kennel operator knows of a client that is looking for a new home for their Maltese. They will be able to give you a good idea about the dog's temperament and the care the dog has received.

3. Contact Maltese rescue groups. These animal rescue groups specialize in finding homes for Maltese dogs in need. A good rescue group will make certain that the dog's veterinary care is up to date and that the dog is spayed or neutered. The group will also know the dog's temperament and any behavior issues. Most rescue groups complete adoptions after conducting interviews, reviewing references and possibly a home visit. The goal of the group is to make a good match that will result in the dog staying with the adopter for life.

4. Search shelters. Some shelters do not work with rescue groups so it is possible to find a Maltese in a California animal shelter. It will be more difficult to determine the dog's temperament since shelters are loud scary places and the dog may not exhibit his normal personality. If you adopt a Maltese from a shelter, give the dog time to adjust to his new home. It can take up to three weeks for his true personality to shine through so be patient.

5. Bring your new best friend home. After the successful search, slowly acclimate your dog to your routine and habits. Work with a trainer to deal with any behavior issues as soon as they appear. Slowly switch food to prevent upset stomach. Enjoy spending time with the cute Maltese

Housebreak An Adopted Dog

Adopting a dog can be one of the happiest days of your life--however, that happiness often turns to frustration and anger--if the adopted dog has a housetraining problem. One of the main reasons dogs get dropped off at shelters, get abandoned and even put to sleep is due to not being housebroken. Housetraining is really not a behavior problem; it is a location problem. All you have to do to properly housetrain your adopted dog is to teach him the right areas to go. Any dog can be housetrained--it just requires patience, understanding dog behavior--and a little bit of time. Here are some steps to a housetrained dog.

Instructions

1. Understand that with an adopted dog, housetraining is a behavior that has to be taught. The most important step in housetraining is managing your dog's behavior. A crate makes it extremely easy to housetrain your dog, because the crate will confine your dog to a certain area while you cannot watch her. Some people feel bad about putting their dogs into a crate, but a crate really is one of the safest, most humane tools to use for housetraining a dog.

2. Start off by teaching your dog to associate the crate as a good place to be. This is done by making positive associations with your dog in the crate. Some good steps to take are: feeding your dog in the crate, having your dog go into the crate to get treats and anytime you give your dog a new toy; have him go into the crate to get it.

3. Once your dog has made a positive association with the crate you can start to use it whenever you have to leave the house. One of the most important steps in housetraining is making sure that your dog never makes a mistake inside the house. By keeping a close eye on your dog and by using the crate, you can set up an environment where your dog never has the opportunity to make a mistake.

4. Give positive feedback when your dog goes outside. A big housetraining mistake that a lot of people make is to let the dog outside on her own. You always want to go outside with your dog so that you can reward and praise your dog for going outside.

5. When you catch your dog going inside the house, don't overdo the punishment. All you need to do is simply interrupt the behavior. If you harshly punish your dog for making a mistake inside the house, it can have adverse affects on all of your housetraining efforts. Harsh punishment will sometimes condition the dog to never go when you are standing close by. When this happens, the owner tends to stand outside for long periods of time waiting for their dog to go, but the dog won't because he is expecting some form of punishment.

6. When your dog makes a mistake in the house, simply interrupt the behavior and immediately take your dog out. Once outside, encourage your dog to go and reward your dog the instant she has relieved herself.

7. Understand that you need to catch your dog making the mistake inside the house. Punishing your dog after the behavior has occurred will only confuse your dog and make the housetraining all the more difficult.

8. Remember to be patient, manage your dog's behavior, interrupt when he is making a mistake and reward for going in the right places.

Ship A Pet Overseas

The most common problem when shipping your pet overseas is not having the correct health care documentation completed before your arrival. Every country has its own set of regulations concerning pet transportation and these regulations can change frequently. Airlines also have specific crate requirements depending on the size and breed of your pet. Hiring a professional pet shipper can minimize the stress of preparing to ship your pet overseas and help to answer questions that you may not have known the questions for.

Instructions

1. Contact your veterinarian to get a complete medical history record for your pet to provide to the pet shipper. This information can avoid unnecessary tests and exams if they have already been completed.

2. Locate a pet shipper by typing in your the airport code of the airline that you plan to use, the country that you would like to ship your pet to, the services that you will be requiring, the state that you will be shipping your pet from and breed information about your pet.

3. Contact more than one pet shipper to compare prices for their services. Pet shipping is generally expensive. Plan ahead by organizing your finances to prepare for shipping costs, quarantine fees (if applicable), duty costs, boarding fees, crate rental fees and travel tickets.

4. Collect personal items from home that will help comfort your pet during transport, such as blankets, old clothes, or old shoes that carry your scent on them. This will help to calm your pet during travel.

Care For The Baby Orangutan Monkeys At The Santuaries

Orangutan sanctuaries are the only areas left in the world for wild orangutans. This species is endangered because of deforestation and poachers. Most sanctuaries will take in orphaned orangutans and attempt to rehabilitate them back into the wild by pairing them with wild orangutans that will show them the ropes. This is very beneficial and hopefully, the species will be saved by this process along with governments setting aside sanctuaries for orangutans to inhabit. Caring for a baby primate is as difficult as raising a human child because they take as much attention, if not more.

Instructions

1. Diaper your orangutan from the moment you get it. This will keep your floors clean and avoid accidents. Eventually, when the orangutan begins to sleep in the wild with fellow orangutans, it will not need the diaper.

2. Feed the orangutan a non-soy formula. Some believe that soy causes aggression in adults. In order to take the guess work and harmful possibilities out of the equation, do not feed your orangutan soy products. Wean your orangutan before it is a year old. Primates love the bottle as much as babies, and it is not healthy for them.

3. Supplement the formula with fresh pieces of cut up fruits and veggies. Bananas, apples, melons, broccoli, and carrots are popular with this species. Allow them to pick it up and eat it.

4. Give your orangutan baby monkey biscuits as a snack or treat. They should eat as often as a human baby would, at least once in a two- to four-hour time period.

5. Teach your baby orangutan to sleep with a wild family or in a cage placed in a quiet room. The cage should have a watering system for primates, soft bedding (a folded sheet is fine), and a toy or two. Baby primates love stuffed animals. Place a dark sheet or blanket over the cage to provide darkness while they sleep, even during the day. Baby orangutans don't need naps, but sometimes they like to take them. They will normally sleep 12 hours at night.

6. Take your orangutan to the vet for regular checkups, keeping a record of height, weight, instructions from your vet, and also anesthesia type and amount.

What Is A Contract Provision

A contract ordinarily contains many provisions.

Every contract, written or oral, contains one or more contract provisions. Such provisions are clauses in the contract language that make clear what agreements are the subject(s) of the contract. It also includes whom and what the provisions address.

Legal Definition of Provision

A contract is an "agreement between two or more persons, which creates an obligation to do or not to do a particular thing," according to Black's Law Dictionary. "Provision" comes from old English law, meaning "having foresight to take into account that no matters what happens, the parties to the contract agreed to its risks and responsibilities."

Eample of Contract Provisions

If a store owner agrees to sell a desk to a customer, the contract would likely contain basic provisions that state the seller, the buyer, the price and a description of the desk. This contract may also contain provisions concerning what happens if the desk is not delivered on time, if there are defects in the desk, and what the seller's rights are if the buyer's payment is defective.

Severable Contracts

Contracts may contain agreements about severability of provisions. A contract for homeowner's insurance may contain provisions stating that if one or another agreement in the contract is void or illegal, the rest of the contract still exists. The contract would then be understood as if the severed provisions never existed.

Housetraining A Dog

House-training is a must when you own a dog.

House-training a dog takes consistency and patience. It is best to house-train dogs when they are puppies, but dogs can be housebroken no matter what their age. When done correctly, house-training can be completed within a few days. The key is consistency, so you may want to plan to take some time off work so that you can devote uninterrupted time to potty training. Remember that praise and rewards work better than yelling and consequences.

Instructions

1. Locate the area where you want your dog to go to the bathroom. Usually outside is best, but you could also choose to paper train your dog in a specific location inside your house.

2. Supervise your dog constantly. When you notice your dog turning in circles, squatting or starting to use the bathroom in your house, immediately say, "No. Outside," and take your dog out. Continue doing this until your dog learns to signal you by standing near the door to go outside. Be sure to take it out right away when it does this.

3. Praise and pet your dog every time it potties outside. Dogs want to please you and will respond to this praise.

Instructions

Know the History of the Cowardly Lion Costume

1. Know that the Cowardly Lion is a character in the "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" book by Frank Baum.

2. Keep in mind that the Cowardly Lion is very shy but does speak and interact with humans.

3. Know that the Cowardly Lion often travels with companions Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Toto the Dog.

Make a Cowardly Lion Costume

4. Take a light brown-colored hooded sweat suit one size larger than what you usually wear, and turn it inside out. This will serve as your "furry" upper torso.

5. Cut an oval of brown felt or fur, which will be the furry belly.

6. Stitch the felt or bur on with brown thread, or use fabric glue to adhere it.

7. Cut out 2 ear-shaped pieces of felt or fur.

8. Stitch the 2 ears to the top of the hooded sweatshirt.

9. Cut out long strips of felt or fur. Sew them around your face on the hood of the sweatshirt.

10. Sew as many strips as you find visually appealing. The more strips you attach to the hood, the thicker the mane will look.

11. Create a tail for your costume. You can cut out a long strip of fur and sew on small strips at the end for a fringe.

Give Away Baby Chickens For Pets

Soft and cute baby chicken needs a good home

Chickens make good pets. They don't require much upkeep, they are relatively inexpensive and they provide good companionship. In addition, chickens can lay fresh eggs, eliminate garden pests and supply a good natural fertilizer. Giving away baby chickens is an easy process; it won't take you long to find good homes for your chicks.

Instructions

1. Create an ad. Indicate the age of the chicks, whether they're male or female and what type of chicken they are. You might want to post a picture of the chickens in the ad as well.

2. Put the ad in your local newspaper or print flyers and distribute them locally at your public library, grocery store or bookstore. Craigslist and eBay are popular websites on which to post online advertisements for pets.

3. Evaluate and thoroughly vet anyone offering to take your baby chickens before you give them away. People who want your chicks should be knowledgeable about chickens and have the means and will to give them a healthy, caring and sustainable home.

Is A Swiffer Dangerous To Pets

Swiffer products are not harmful to pets.

Since 2004, email chain letters have warned pet owners of exposing their pets to Swiffer products, especially the Swiffer Wet Jet solution. Liver damage, and even death, have been cited as consequences. The ASPCA has verified that Swiffer products pose no risk to pets.

Application

The Swiffer solution is contained in a chamber inside the Swiffer Wet Jet mop. A button is depressed, and the solution is propelled. The user pushes the mop over the solution to clean the floor.

Ingredients

The main ingredient in Swiffer solution is water.

The ingredients of the Swiffer Wet Jet spray solution are water, propylene glycol and isopropyl alcohol. The product contains a one to four percent solution of ispropyl alcohol and propylene glycol. The remainder of the mixture is water.

Exposure

Ispropyl alcohol dries quickly.

Ispropyl alcohol accelerates evaporation. Therefore, the chance of a pet ingesting the solution after application is negligible.

Propylene glycol

Shampoo contains propylene glycol.

Propylene glycol appears commercially in food and beauty products as a carrier or bonding agent. In shampoo, it is a humectant.

Misconception

Poison reports rely heavily on the confusion between propylene glycol and ethylene glycol. Both are contained in antifreeze. Ethylene glycol is fatal, but is not contained in Swiffer products. Propylene glycol is classified as nontoxic by the Dow Chemical Company.

Characteristics Of A Siberian Cat

The Siberian cat, sometimes called the Siberian Forest cat, is a semi-longhaired natural breed of cat (uncultivated by humans). Although it is the national cat of Russia, its origin is a mystery. Because it was regarded as an ordinary house cat in Russia, little recorded information about the breed exists before modern times.

History

The Siberian was included among the breeds shown at the time of the first cat show ever held in the USSR in 1987. This breed was only imported to the United States in 1990, and although Siberians are much sought after by cat fanciers, they are still rare in American households. The breed was accepted for registration by the Cat Fanciers' Association in February of 2000. In 2006, a Siberian cat advanced to championship status in the show ring.

Appearance

The Siberian is a strong, powerfully-built cat with muscular hind legs and a large stomach. The male typically weighs between 15 and 20 pounds, and the female, 10 to 15 pounds. The Siberian is shorter and stockier than the similar-looking Maine Coon cat and Norwegian Forest cat. It is is slower to mature than most other cats; a Siberian kitten may not reach full size until it is 5 years of age.

Coats and Colors

The Siberian's winter coat is rich and full, while its summer coat is shorter and not as dense. Because it has evolved to survive harsh northern winters, it has a triple fur coat that resists water. This breed comes in all traditional cat colors, including some with "pointed" colors (having a different color on the feet, tail, ears and face mask). Many owners and breeders believe that the coat of the Siberian female in particular is hypoallergenic, thus making it a good pet for those who are allergic to cats. Scientific studies are required to support these claims, according to the website CatRealm.org.

Character

The Siberian is known for being good-natured, playful and active, and is often described as being "dog-like." This breed enjoys being around people and becomes lonely without humans or other pets around. Siberians are renowned for their leaping abilities; they are natural climbers and love high places. They are attracted to fresh running water and will drink from the faucet. Although they have a soft voice, Siberians are quite vocal and often "talk" by making a chirping sound.

Care

A Siberian cat is generally very hardy, with no known genetic defects. It does not shed much, except for twice a year when it drops its coat. Unlike other long-haired breeds, its fur resists matting; a once- or twice-weekly brushing is sufficient. Siberians are intelligent and trainable, requiring both mental and physical stimulation to keep them from mischief, states the website of the Traditional Cat Association.

Zookeeper Salary

Zookeepers take care of a variety of zoo creatures.

The job of a zookeeper requires knowledge of animals and the ability to work with them within a zoo or animal park setting. Zookeepers typically help feed animals, keep an eye on their health and note details related to any behavioral changes. Zookeepers may also put on demonstrations for zoo visitors to teach them more about the animals at the zoo.

Education

Zookeepers typically earn a degree focused on animals or wildlife. Those pursuing a career as a zookeeper can expect to need an associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field. Possible degree options include biology or animal science. Beyond education, experience working with animals can help you land a position as a zookeeper. Specific knowledge related to the ability to communicate effectively and a demonstrated comfort dealing with animals and the public represent other skills typical of a zookeeper.

Salary Basics

The average annual salary of a zookeeper is $21,550 as of May 2008, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Zookeepers can also get their start by volunteering at local zoos and animal hospitals that deal with exotic animals. In this case, the chance to gain additional experience and education increase the potential earnings of the position. Considered a part of the animal care industry, the salary potential of zookeepers is in line with the median annual wages of animal caretakers across the board. The median annual wage for animal caretakers as of May 2008, according to the BLS, was $19,360.

Salary Expectations

Salary for zookeepers and other animal caretakers averages out to approximately $10.50 per hour. With some experience and demonstrated dedication in the field, the top earners can earn median annual wages of $31,660 as of May 2009, according to the BLS. Those falling in the lowest 10 percent of earners in the occupation, such as entry-level employees, earn a median annual wage of $15,590 as of May 2009.

Other Salary Considerations

Salary expectations for zookeepers and other animal caretakers also vary depending on the location of the job. Those working in Kentucky earn an average wage of $20,290 as of May 2009, according to the BLS. In Alaska, professionals within the field earn an average $27,190 annually as of May 2009. Zookeepers who work in larger and possibly world-renowned zoos may find better pay and benefits as they progress through the ranks and become supervisors or managers.

Alabama Gulf Coast Events

Coastal Alabama is home to pristine Gulf beaches and big-draw events.

Although it does not share as much coastline with the Gulf of Mexico as some of its neighboring states, Alabama packs a lot of activities into its coastal region. Each year the Gulf Coast of Alabama hosts a number of annual events that people travel from all over to experience first hand. From Mobile Bay to Gulf Shores and beyond, there is always something going on in what many Southerners call LA---Lower Alabama.

National Shrimp Festival

The white sand beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama attract many tourists each year for a taste of fun in the sun along the Gulf of Mexico, but nothing rivals the crowd that the annual National Shrimp Festival brings to this area. Each year during the second weekend of October, the festival attracts more then 300,000 visitors and 300 vendors offering fine art, crafts and seafood---particularly shrimp.

The four-day event has been running annually since 1971, according to the Alabama Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce. The recent festivals include a children's activity village, sand sculpture contests, two stages of various musical acts and more shrimp than you can shake a stick at.

Frank Brown International Songwriters' Festival

For 10 days each November, the Frank Brown International Songwriters' Festival attracts singers and songwriters from across the globe who wish to have their work heard by the public. This event takes place at up to 25 venues in Florida and Alabama, including stages in Gulf Shores.

According to the Flora-Bama website, the festival represents the largest gathering of songwriters at one time anywhere in the world. Most concerts are free to attend, with the exception of some club venues that impose a nominal cover charge. This event is a rare place where fans of music have the chance to see Grammy-winning artists perform as well see them share the stage with up-and-coming singer/songwriters that are often the stars of tomorrow.

Bowl Games

It may be called something different every few years, but a college football bowl game is always part of the January lineup of events in Mobile, Alabama. This bowl game began in 1999 as the Mobile Alabama Bowl, which featured TCU and East Carolina. From 2000 until 2010 the bowl changed its name to the GMAC Bowl, which has pitted teams from Conference USA against the Mid-American Conference and Western Athletic Conference. As of January 6, 2011 the game will be called the GoDaddy.com Bowl and currently features teams from the Mid-American and Sun Belt Conferences. The first GoDaddy.com Bowl selected Middle Tennessee State University and Miami University of Ohio.

The game is played each year at Ladd Peebles Stadium. It is usually the last bowl game played prior to the BCS National Championship Game.

Mardi Gras

When people hear the term Mardi Gras, they generally think of New Orleans, but the first Mardi Gras celebration in America took place in coastal Alabama in the city of Mobile.

Every year since 1703 the city of Mobile has celebrated Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, for nearly three weeks leading up to Lent. The celebration fills the streets of Mobile with parades, live music, marching bands and revelers. Masked participants toss beads, Moon Pies, coins and candy from floats throughout the carnival parade season. According to the Mobile Bay Convention and Visitor's Bureau website, mobile is proud to be home to America's "family" Mardi Gras celebration, and invites both young and old to take part in the fun.

Become A Foster Dog Parent

The Humane Society estimates that approximately 5 million cats and dogs are put down in shelters each year.

When a dog is injured, pregnant or untrained, a shelter may put it in foster care so that it can enjoy a quieter environment with more personalized attention. Foster parents will generally only keep a dog for a brief period -- anywhere from a few weeks to a few months -- but this time gives the dog a better chance of entering a permanent adoptive home. In addition, when you foster a dog, the shelter has more space to rescue another dog. If you have the means, you can help multiple animals by taking a dog into your care.

Instructions

1. Assess your living situation and determine what type of dog you can care for. An injured or pregnant dog will be better off in a place without small children or other pets, while a shy dog in need of lots of love and exposure to humans will do well in an environment with many family members or other animals. Ensure that you have the funds and time to devote to a dog.

2. Contact your local shelter to see if it has a foster care program. Describe your current living environment so the shelter can ascertain if any of the available dogs would make a good match for your circumstances. Check with local animal rescue groups or your veterinarian if your shelter does not have a foster program.

3. Apply to become a foster dog parent. Most shelters and rescue groups require you to fill out an application before you can meet a dog. Since many dogs have come from abusive homes, shelters want to ensure that the dogs are going to a safe place. This may include a home inspection and a background check.

4. Go to the shelter and meet the dog. Sometimes, dogs are returned from foster care because the foster parents did not understand their dog's temperament and needs. Meeting the dog before you bring it home helps ensure that you will have a successful fostering experience. Ask lots of questions about the care for your particular foster dog, such as how much medicine it takes or what type of training it still needs.

5. Prepare your house for your new guest. Puppies require the most adjustment, since they are prone to chew and still need to be potty-trained. Purchase the food, brush, toys, leash and other materials that you will need, and set up a place for the dog to sleep.

6. Go to the shelter to collect your dog. Attend an orientation, handling, first aid or training session if your shelter requires it.

Make Your Own Realistic Virtual Pets

Virtual pets are computer-simulated animals that require users to care for them as they grow. As technology advances, these simulated pets have become increasingly realistic, allowing for more hands-on game play. Realistic virtual pets can be used as a stepping stone for young children who would like their own pet, yet may not be responsible enough to care for her. Because the pets are virtual, it will also allow for a wider variety of animals, such as unicorns, monkeys, wolves and tigers.

Instructions

1. Open your Web browser and navigate to a realistic virtual pet website, such as Foopets, AVirtualHorse or Happy Pets. The link to these websites can be found in "Resources."

2. Click the "Sign Up" button. This is usually located at the top of the screen.

3. Enter your information, such as birthday and email address. You will then be directed to a screen that allows you to start creating your own virtual pets. Select the realistic information you would like your pet to have. For example, for dogs, you may select your preferred breed, then will have the option to select realistic coloring based on your choice of breed. For horses, you will be able to select the breed you would like to base your animal off of, then choose the type of mane, coloring and spots that the breed of horses is likely to have in the wild. You will also be able to customize the name and gender of your animal.

4. Check your email for a confirmation notice confirming your account information. Click the link in the email and you will be directed to the virtual pet website. You will now be able to play with, feed and interact with your virtual pet.

5. Log into your account often to care for your pets. Because they are realistic pets, they require care multiple times throughout the day. For example, horses may need to be groomed and exercised daily, while puppies need to be fed, trained and have their messes cleaned up. Failure to do so can result in the animal's becoming sick and dying, much like a real pet.

Raise Pygmy Goat Animals

Pygmy goats are miniature goats that stand as tall as 22 inches. Pygmy goats are hardy animals that need little maintenance aside from food, water, shelter and pasture. This type of goat makes an ideal family pet and helps maintain farm pastures by eating the bramble and brush that horses or cows do not eat. Properly caring for your pygmy goat requires planning ahead and having everything ready before you bring your goats home. From preparing the goat pen to maintaining vaccinations your pygmy goat will remain healthy and happy for years.

Instructions

Before Bringing Your Pygmy Home

1. Livestock require periodic vaccinations and de-worming treatments throughout the year. Find a veterinarian in your area that specializes in livestock. During the initial appointment, proper vaccinations are administered to your goat. Set up other veterinarian appointments at the initial appointment. This helps you plan ahead and be prepared for each appointment.

2. Spray for pests and rodents in the pen. Before setting up the pen, ensure that it is free of pests and rodents. Spray the proper insecticides and rodent killers in corners or areas prone to infestation.

3. Provide the goat with an over-sized dog house, barn or stable. Place plenty of clean hay or straw on the ground as bedding. Install low-to-the-ground troughs in the housing area. The troughs are for food and water.

4. Check the pen for drafty areas. Pygmy goats need warm, draft-free areas for sleeping and during colder months. Reinforce drafty areas by hanging thick blankets on the walls or by adding additional bedding.

5. Pygmy goats need ample pasture for grazing. Reinforce wide-slatted fencing with additional wood or chicken wire. This ensures that the pygmy goat does not escape. Set up the pasture in an area with plenty of pasture grasses. Provide low-to-the-ground feeding and water troughs.

Daily Care

6. Provide goat feed that does not contain urea. Place hay and goat feed in the feeding troughs. Provide plenty of fresh water several times a day.

7. Bathe your goat every couple of months. Tether the goat to the fence. Wet the goat down with water. Apply dog shampoo to the goat. Lather the shampoo and rinse with fresh water. Trim the goat's hooves after bathing. Pick up the front left hoof and clean out dirt and rock from the hoof with a hoof pick. Trim the sides of the hoof down to the white sole using your hoof shears. Fill a bucket with soap and water, dip a toothbrush in the water and scrub the hoof clean. Notice the lines that run in rings around the hoof. Cut the hoof following the parallel rings with a hoof knife. Cut off a little at a time until the pinkish sole appears. Repeat the process with other hooves.

8. Keep the pen thoroughly cleaned. Clean up old, dirty hay or straw and them replace with fresh bedding. Clean the food and water troughs. Spray out the troughs, wash them with mild soap and rinse the troughs thoroughly. Dry the troughs before putting in fresh feed. Clean the troughs at least once a week.

What Do Bad Teeth In A Dog Look Like

Good dental health is just as important for dogs as it is for humans.

Good dental health is vital to your dog's happiness and overall welfare, and good dental health begins with good teeth. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS), 80 percent of dogs exhibit oral health problems by age 3. Bad teeth can lead to periodontal disease, which can lead to gum problems, tooth loss and possible damage to other organs, such as the heart, liver and kidneys.

Types of Problems

Many things can cause bad teeth, but the primary causes are plaque and tartar build-up, tooth decay or cavities, dental fractures and "bite problems." Although plaque and tartar build-up are the most common cause, dental fractures are very common in dogs that chew frequently on very hard objects, such as commercially available cow hooves. Obvious signs of bad teeth are tooth discoloration and broken teeth, which are easily seen by opening your dog's mouth and inspecting its teeth.

Plaque and Tartar

Gum, or periodontal, disease is caused by plaque and tartar, and is the most common dental condition affecting dogs. Saliva and food debris combine between the teeth to cause plaque formations on teeth. If allowed to accumulate, bacteria will grow and irritate the gum tissue. This can lead to bone infection surrounding the teeth. Calcium salts from saliva turn the plaque into tartar, which begins to form within just a few days if the tooth surface is not clean.

Symptoms and Signs

The most obvious sign of plaque and tartar built-up, especially near the gum line, is discolored teeth--ranging from yellow to brown to black--especially along the sides and back. Other signs include bad breath, bleeding and inflammation of the gums, receding gums and loose or missing teeth. A change in eating or chewing habits, depression and pawing at the face or mouth can also signal bad teeth or other dental problems.

Prevention and Solutions

The first step toward prevention of bad teeth is to inspect your dog's mouth on a regular basis. This should begin at about 3 to 4 weeks, when a puppy's 28 temporary teeth begin to erupt. It should be a regular routine by the time your dog is 4 months old, which is when its 42 permanent teeth begin to emerge. A regular dental care regime should include not only a visual inspection of your dog's teeth, but also regular tooth brushing with canine toothpaste.

Veterinary Dentistry

Be sure to have your dog's teeth checked on a regular basis by a vet.

A routine physical exam by a veterinarian, which includes a dental exam, is an important part of making sure your dog has good teeth. A professional can recommend the best oral hygiene program for your dog and provide the best advice on chew toys. A vet can also help you choose the best diet for your dog and teach you avoid feeding soft or sticky foods--a major cause of plaque and tartar build-up.

Cat Declawing Recovery Tips

Some tips can help your cat recover from a declawing procedure.

According to Paw-Rescue.org, 31 percent of cat owners choose to have their cats declawed to prevent possible damage to household items such as furniture. Declawing is a surgical procedure in which the cat's top toe joint is removed along with the claw. If you choose this method over using scratching posts or regular claw trimming, some tips can aid your cat in its recovery.

Younger is Better

The younger the cat, the faster and easier the recovery. Although cats can be declawed at any age, the best time is when they are between three and five months old. When declawing is performed at this age, cats can often be completely pain-free and walking normally in just a few days following the surgery.

Replace Litter with Newspaper

Regular cat litter can contaminate the surgical areas. As an alternative, replace your cat's regular litter with shredded newspaper for about seven days after the cat returns home after the surgery. Another option is to purchase a product called Yesterday's News cat litter, which is manufactured from recycled paper products.

Discourage Play

Although it may be difficult to prevent a young cat from wanting to play, don't engage your cat in activities like chasing a string or playing with toys. Try to minimize your cat's running, jumping and playing for three weeks after the surgery. It's also better to keep your cat indoors during this time.

Watch for Complications

Watch for signs that your cat is not healing properly or is experiencing complications from the surgery. Telltale signs include frequent bleeding or excessive swelling in the paws. If your cat is still unable or unwilling to walk five days after the surgery, it could also be a sign that something is wrong. Contact your veterinarian if any of these signs or symptoms are present.

Consider Pain Medications

Declawing can be an extremely painful procedure for your cat, although your cat may not show it. A cat's instinct is to try to mask the fact that it is in pain so that it doesn't appear vulnerable to predators. Talk to your veterinarian about available pain medications to help your cat get through the recovery period more easily,

1. Feed your dog a healthy food that will give it the necessary calories for the day. Puppies will need a lot more calories than an older dog would need.

2. Take your dog out to exercise every day and make sure it is being active and involved. A good amount of exercise for the average dog is 45 minutes a day.

3. Check your dog's sleeping area for any drafts, breezes or water seeping into the walls, as these nuisances can make your dog uncomfortable when it is trying to sleep.

4. Place a crate in the spot where you dog likes to sleep. The crate should be large enough for your dog to walk around and stand up in. Place a blanket on the floor of the crate and add some toys and comfort items.

5. Bring your dog to the crate at the time it usually goes to sleep. Lead the dog into the crate and make sure it is secure before you leave.

Pros & Cons Of The Circus Animals

Pros & Cons of the Circus Animals

Attending a circus event is a rite of passage for many youngsters. Generations of people have brought their children to see wild circus animals. Global awareness of animal rights and wildlife conservation efforts are changing the sentimental feelings the circus once provoked. China has banned animal circuses and Bolivia has banned live animals from traveling circuses. As of 2011, the British government also is working a policy pertaining to wild animals in circuses.

Potential Breeding Program

Circus animals such as tigers and elephants are on the endangered species list. Circus animals bred into captivity increase the species' odds of survival. Banning circuses from using animals would decrease the number of species in captivity and increase the chance of extinction. However, some circuses won't allow their animals to breed. Circus demands for wild animals increase the numbers of animals removed from wild. Efforts need to be made to encourage circus owners to breed animals to maintain captive animal populations and reduce the number of wild animals removed from their natural environments.

Circus Animals' Fate

Circus animals age and eventually outgrow their usefulness. Finding suitable homes for former circus animals is difficult. Retired animals must be placed in a zoo, sanctuary or with an individual trained to care for wild animals. Carson and Barnes Circus supports its own herd of retired elephants in Oklahoma. It is illegal to euthanize endangered species for no reason. Circuses must report all endangered species deaths to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Animal rights activists object to the overwhelming number of animals that have died due to abusive treatment and lack of veterinary care in circuses.

Condemning Cultural Traditions

Some cultural traditions are founded upon animal exploitation for entertainment purposes. Bull fighting practices are legal in Spain, Mexico and parts of France. Although bull fighting is extremely cruel, banning bull fighting would affect the bull fighting cultural tradition. Proponents of using animals for entertainment argue that condemning animal related events shows a lack of sensitivity toward cultural traditions. The circus is a cultural tradition in the United States and throughout the world. Restricting animal use in a circus show could be viewed as an infringement on an individual's right to enjoy animal acts. Differing viewpoints regarding what constitutes animal abuse compounds this issue.

Quality of Life

Circuses train wild animals to perform unnatural acts for human amusement. Training techniques involve using whips and other devices to force animals to act. Proponents claim that there is evidence that animals enjoy performing and that they form bond with trainers. Circus animals are forced to live in a cage, travel extensively and exist in an unnatural environment. Proponents view circus animals as an opportunity for children to view and appreciate animals. Opponents argue that animal circus acts are demeaning to animals and do not teach children appreciate and respect wild animals.

Become A Patient Advocate

Patient advocates are not doctors, and they're not lawyers. Instead, they fall somewhere in between, helping the seriously ill navigate the often complex world of treatment options, patients' rights, insurance and government benefits. They are, in a sense, a personal assistant for patients and their families, who help make sure they have all the information they need to make the best decisions and who make sure those decisions are carried out. Patient advocacy as a career is a relatively new niche created by the increased complexity of the for-profit medical and health insurance industries, though, so most positions are entry-level.

Instructions

1. Get educated. It's rare to find a college-level program devoted to patient advocacy. Instead, patient advocates come from a variety of backgrounds, but virtually all have some college-level education. Any degree in health care, medicine, public health or social work can be an important part of a resume. Others come to patient advocacy after careers in law or medicine.

2. Learn the medical industry (and keep learning). The work of a patient advocate is more generalist than specialist, with the advocate tending to address all the needs of her clients rather than specializing in unique areas. Thus, despite achieving a degree, a patient advocate must gain experience that imparts a thorough knowledge of laws, policies and practices of managed health care and related institutions. Even working patient advocates have to stay updated on laws, policies and treatment options.

3. Find jobs. Patient advocates can be hired by and for hospitals, insurance companies or patients themselves. Thus, there is a wide range of job opportunities, but finding them can be a challenge. Typical online job listing sites like Craigslist and Monster.com can be helpful. MedHunters, a job-search site specifically for the medical industry, also has patient advocate listings (see Resources).

Rescue Maltese Puppies

Rescue Maltese Puppies

A Maltese is a toy dog no larger than seven pounds and their coats are pure white. Taking on a rescue dog can be a big responsibility but with a little love and patience, it can be one of the most rewarding things you have ever done. You can help by being a part of the community that helps foster Maltese puppies until they find a permanent home.

Instructions

1. Join a reputable rescue group. These are groups that have access to Maltese puppies that come in and need a home or temporary foster care. Find groups by talking to your local Humane Society. They will direct you to the person in charge of the Maltese rescue group in your area.

2. Decide if you will foster or keep the Maltese puppies that are offered to you. Fostering and rescuing can mean the same thing. If you are intending to foster only, this means you will have to eventually place the dog into a loving home when the call is made that one is available. These are temporary shelters to protect the Maltese from being euthanized until a suitable home is found. Keeping a Maltese permanently means that you are taking the dog in and will keep it yourself. Keep in mind how many you are able to take care of since you will need to notify the rescue organization if you can no longer participate.

3. Make sure you are on a contact list. Calls can come in at any time of day or night and you must be available to pick up a Maltese rescue puppy if possible. These are lives you are saving and sacrifices have to be made if you are serious about wanting to help. This can mean a call during dinner or the middle of the night asking you to pick up a puppy. Be sure to notify the rescue group when going on vacation or unavailability. They need to be able to depend on you.

4. Have your home ready for your rescue puppy. Since you will never know when a Maltese puppy is in need of rescue, have items that you need available at any time. Things you will need are food, bedding, water bowls, toys and bath supplies. Even flea and tick products are things to have readily available.

5. Be prepared for issues from your Maltese that can make things harder on you and your family. Not all rescue dogs will come housebroken or trained. You may receive a Maltese that barks all night the first night or one that has multiple accidents. You are taking in a living, breathing creature that is confused and scared. Know your limitations and what steps will have to be taken to overcome these potential problems.

6. Be aware that fostering is temporary. You can become very attached to your Maltese rescue puppy. If you are a foster parent though, this puppy will find a new home and you will have to give it up. This can be hard on your and your family. Discuss with your family what it means to foster a Maltese puppy so that they too can be aware of the changes in your household.

Groom An Irish Wolf Hound

A wheaten-colored Irish wolfhound.

The Irish wolfhound is the world's tallest dog breed. It is considered a friendly and good-natured dog in spite of the fact that it was originally bred to hunt wolves and the large Irish Elk. The Irish wolfhound comes in a variety of colors, and all have a wire-haired coat. Because of this, if you have an Irish wolfhound, you should plan on giving it a thorough grooming at least once a week.

Instructions

1. Get your Irish wolfhound accustomed to grooming at an early age. Brush your dog with a soft brush. Feel gently around its body, and lift its tail and feet to get it used to being groomed in these areas.

2. Remove excess hair around the ears by plucking with a finger and thumb.

3. Use thinning scissors to tidy the hair on the feet and around the neck.

4. Trim the hair under the wolfhound's belly especially the tuck up. There should not be a fringe of hair hanging down. The Irish wolfhound should have a clean under-line.

5. When necessary to bathe the wolfhound, do not use a human shampoo, as it will dry out the skin too much. Use a shampoo formulated specially for dogs.
