3. Matching - In this step of the adoption process your family will be matched with a child. Agencies may provide you with profiles of children waiting for adoption. 4. Meeting the Child - You will be given a chance to meet and get to know the child waiting to be adopted. Distance is an important factor in this step. You will be given the opportunity to meet and get to know a child in your geographical area. An out of state adoption may require that you make a decision without a lot of face-to-face interaction with the child.

5. Placement in Your Home - The child will be placed in your home and you will be given a chance to live with and get to know your child. It is unfortunate that some adoptions fail at this step. Preparing and paying special attention to the previous steps can prevent this from happening. For a successful adoption, this is a joyous time and is every bit as exciting as giving birth to a biological child.

It is legal for breeders to sell dogs at auctions in Ohio.

Because of lax dog breeding laws, Ohio has a large population of puppy mills and unwanted shelter dogs. Efforts are ongoing to change laws on kennels and mills to cut down on the amount of homeless pets.

Kennel Ownership

Ohio law defines a kennel as any person, business or partnership involved in the participation of breeding for sale or for hunting. Dogs owned by kennels are considered property. Registration fees are paid to county auditors per kennel and determined by the number of dogs residing at the kennel. Numbers are assigned to each incoming dog, which are engraved on tags. The color of the tags changes each year.

Registered Stock

Dogs are considered livestock in Ohio and it is legal for breeders to sell dogs at auctions in the same manner as other livestock. Registration papers need to show the dog's lineage and age, and other relevant information such as disease history or offspring.

SB 95

Ohio SB 95 is a bill passed by the Senate that has come under criticism for encouraging irresponsible breeding in Ohio. This bill is colloquially known as the "puppy mill bill," with the intent to establish better standards of care for dogs in breeding facilities. The bill requires breeders to size crates and cages based on the weight of the dog rather than the height of the dog. Opposition to this bill claims this will result in dogs not having enough space. Another standard of care maintains that high volume breeders must keep kennels at temperatures between 50 degrees and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The bill does not establish any laws regarding the transport of bred dogs.

Instructions

1. Attach the collar or halter to your pygmy goat and attach the leash to the metal ring on the collar or halter.

2. Tie the end of a leash to a tree or fence post that is located in the sun. Goats should be bathed in warm weather and placed in the sun to keep from getting cold.

3. Fill a bucket with warm water and horse or dog shampoo. Use the amount of shampoo that is advised on the bottle, or just enough to make the water sudsy and fresh smelling.

4. Pour some of the warm, soapy water along the back of the goat's neck, starting at the base of its head and pouring down the length of its back to its tail.

5. Brush the soapy water into your goat's fur, working from the top of the goat to the underside of its belly and down its legs. Scrub the goat all over until the suds are worked fully into its fur. Dip the washcloth into the warm water and use it to wash the goat's face and ears, scrubbing carefully to avoid getting soap in its eyes.

6. Empty the bucket of soapy water and rinse the bucket thoroughly with a hose or in you bathtub until the water is no longer soapy. Refill the bucket with warm water.

7. Pour the warm, clean water over your goat to rinse its fur out, using your hand to work the excess water out of the fur. You may need to refill the bucket multiple times until the water running off your goat is no longer soapy and runs clean.

8. Wipe the goat down with the towel, squeezing gently to remove excess water. Allow the goat to dry in the sun for 10 minutes before you release it to play.

Service dogs are available to people who suffer from mental disabilities.

When most people hear the term "service dog," they probably think of a dog helping a visually impaired person cross the street, or a canine companion aiding someone who is hearing-impaired. Service dogs are available not only to people with physical disabilities, but also to those who suffer from mental disorders such as autism or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Definition

The Americans with Disabilities Act defines a disability as a "mental or physical condition which substantially limit's a major life activity." These activities may include working, learning, or simply performing the basic tasks associated with taking care of oneself. The law also says a dog may be considered a service dog if it is "individually trained to work or perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability." Service dogs are not considered pets or companion animals, which are not subject to the same rigorous requirements and do not have the same legal rights.

Rights

Dogs certified to aid people with mental disabilities are called psychiatric service dogs. Like other service dogs, they are protected under federal law from being excluded from public places from which most dogs would be barred. Psychiatric service dogs may accompany their owners into restaurants and other businesses, as well as on public buses and in taxis. Health codes do not apply, and these dogs can be asked to leave the premises only if they become aggressive or are bothersome to other customers. Owners do not have to prove their need for psychiatric service dogs, nor do they have to provide information on the dog's training or certification.

Technicalities

Within the broad definition of "service dog," there are some finer nuances governing whether a dog is or is not a psychiatric service dog. For instance, if a dog's primary purpose is to provide comfort or emotional support for its owner or another person, that dog is not defined as a psychiatric service dog, and its entry into public areas is not protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act. In some states, these dogs are defined as therapy dogs. Some dogs are classified as social/therapy dogs, and though there is no legal definition for these canines, they are most often dogs who have begun service dog training but failed to complete it. Instead, they have become pets for the disabled.

Tasks

Service dogs for people with mental disabilities are trained to perform some of the same tasks as are assistance dogs for the physically disabled; the tasks are simply performed for a different purpose. For example, both dogs may be trained to help a person balance on the stairs, but for a psychiatric service dog, the need for this task may stem from the side effects of the owner's medication rather than any physical problems with the legs. Psychiatric service dogs also are trained for tasks that relate to mental disorders, such as licking the face to bring an owner out of a night terror or flashback associated with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Training

It takes a special dog to become a psychiatric service dog because, like all other assistance animals, the dog must complete a rigorous course of training and meet certain standards. The standards may vary a bit from one organization to another, but Assistance Dogs International, for example, requires the dog to respond to commands 90 percent of the time, the first time it is asked. The psychiatric service dog must also demonstrate basic obedience training and carry out at least three tasks associated with aiding its owner's disability. Owners must prove that they know provide the care their dogs need and demonstrate knowledge of local laws and public behavior. The birth parent must sign a legal consent form relinquishing parental rights to the child and have this approved by the court. An attorney can guide you through this process. 5. Complete 30 hours of Group Preparation and Selection (GPS) training. A total of ten meetings are a prerequisite to obtaining an adoption license in Alabama. Instructions

1. Choose an adoption agency to work with. There are several licensed adoption agencies that work with the Pennsylvania child welfare system to help adoptive parents find children. Check to see which ones have agency workers in your area of the state. See the Resources section for a directory.

2. Apply to be considered as an adoptive parent. In Pennsylvania, you must fill out an application and undergo initial screening as the first step to adopting a child. This will include a clean bill of health from your doctor, basic financial records to show you can support the child and a list of personal references. You also must pass a criminal background check and not have any history of child abuse. Drug- and violence-related felonies within the last five years disqualify you from adopting, and any conviction for specific sexual or violent crimes will disqualify you.

3. Do a home study with an adoption counselor. This is a series of meetings with you and a Pennsylvania adoption agency worker to see whether your home will be a good fit for adoption and to help you get ready for adopting a child.

4. Meet children available for adoption. Some prospective adoptive parents already know which child they want to adopt, particularly if they are currently fostering the child or if they are a relative. If not, the adoption agency will tell you about different children that might fit well into your home and introduce you to those you want to meet.

5. File a legal notice of your intent to adopt your chosen child. This should be filed by a lawyer licensed in Pennsylvania and is called a "Report of Intent to Adopt." Train Blue Nosed Pit Puppies

Pit bulls often get a bad rap. Dogs are not born "bad," and that statement is just as true for this notorious breed as it is for the Labrador retriever or poodle. The pits who fight, bite and hurt people were either trained to be that way or weren't given enough training on being good canine citizens and misbehave as a result. If you want to own a pit bull, you must train him properly starting at a very young age.

Instructions

1. Show your blue-nosed pit bull that you are the one who is in charge, not him. This is the most important aspect of training your pit bull puppy. Several times a day, hold your pit bull in your arms like a baby with his belly exposed. This action will show him that you are dominant. When you walk him, do so on a leash and make sure you are always side-by-side. Walk through doors first and make him wait to eat. Put the bowl of food in front of him, but don't let him eat unless you permit him to.

2. Play with your blue-nosed pit bull puppy in a way that is non-aggressive. For instance, playing tug-of-war, wrestling and allowing your pit bull to "play bite" will lead to aggressive behavior when he is an adult, if not earlier. In addition, play with your puppy's toys and treats to keep him from being protective of them. Many blue-nosed pit bulls will growl at their owners if they have a toy or treat in their possession. It is important to stop that behavior early by showing your pit puppy that he must let you do what you ask of him.

3. Correct bad behavior in your blue-nosed pit bull puppy as soon as it happens. If he growls or bites, tell him "no" and put him on his back. If he has an accident in the house, tell him "no" and take him outside. If you let bad behavior slide, it will only show him that it is acceptable to act that way and the behavior will progressively get worse.

4. Socialize your blue-nosed pit bull puppy so that he feels comfortable around people as well as other pets. A pit bull puppy who is not socialized will often turn into a dog who is fear-aggressive towards others and will bite as a defense mechanism. Make sure your blue-nosed pit bull puppy is current on his shots before introducing him to other dogs, so that you don't expose him to any viruses.

Your dogs can sniff, run and play together. They can get to know each other before one of them comes into the other dog's territory. Also, this depends on if your dog's breed is extremely territorial or not. Remember, all dogs are different and have different personalities. Take it slow if possible, and you will know what is best for your dog.

5. Let them explore their new house together. Bring one dog into the house if that is the case, and let it off the leash. Watch them closely for any signs of aggression. You may even want to do this first introduction in the backyard if your house has one. Dogs will figure things out. There may be a little growling to establish dominance, and this is okay. Just don't let it get out of hand. Ask your veterinarian for some tips on handling aggression if you think this may be a problem. If you are both moving into a new place, try to bring the dogs at the same time to the new home, so they can explore together. These are safe ways to introduce two dogs.

6. Buy two of everything. Let each of the dogs have their own bowl, leash, collar, and so on. Make or buy two dog beds. Think of having two kids, and how you would want to provide two of everything. It's the same for your dogs. You don't want them to have a reason to fight with each other.

Secure A Virtual Desktop

Security, compatibility and ease of management all drive organizations to use virtual desktops. Regardless of the virtualization technology used to build it, a virtual desktop creates an enclosed system within which changes made by the user or by applications cannot harm the host computer. However, a virtual desktop user should secure the virtual desktop carefully to keep it useful for as long as possible.

Instructions

1. Protect against direct attacks by configuring within the virtual desktop both a host-based firewall and an antivirus. For a Windows virtual desktop, launch the Windows Firewall applet from the control panel and confirm that the firewall is turned on. Download and install an antivirus product. If the virtual desktop is not connected to the Internet, copy both the antivirus installer and its virus definition files to the virtual desktop manually through either shared folders (in VMware) or a USB device (for VMware or Sun VirtualBox.)

2. Encrypt the virtual hard disk. Within the virtual desktop, download and install Truecrypt (see Resources). Launch the "Encrypt System Partition / Drive" wizard from the "System" drop-down menu to encrypt the virtual desktop hard disk. During the process of encrypting the system disk, Truecrypt will create a rescue disk image in the form of an .ISO file. Copy this rescue disk to the host computer and mount it to the virtual DVD drive in order to permit Truecrypt to verify it.

3. Disable remote access if it is not needed. If you use your virtual desktop by directly launching a console session through VMware or VirtualBox, disable Remote Desktop Connections in Windows by launching the System control panel applet and selecting "Remote Settings." Click on the radio button labeled "Don't allow connections to this computer" and click on "OK."

4. Require a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to virtual desktops that are centrally managed, such as those deployed using VMware View. Contact your network administrator for help setting this up.

5. Snapshot the virtual desktop. If your virtualization technology permits it, as VMware does, perform a snapshot of the virtual desktop machine at a point when it is known to be secure and in good condition. Use this snapshot to restore functionality to the virtual desktop in the event that it is compromised.

What Happens When You Donate Your Body To Science

Science wants your body.

Death does not have to be the end of the road for your body. By donating your body to science, it can go on to have a multitude of adventures while helping to advance the medical field. Cadavers have been used to improve every type of surgical procedure, from heart and lung transplants, to tummy tucks and sex change operations. Parts of donated bodies have also been shot into space as passengers on the space shuttle.

Immediately After Death

After you die, the medical school, university or private company that you've donated your body to will arrange the transfer of your body to their facility. The anatomy labs of the medical schools and universities have first priority when a cadaver comes in. If you donate your body to a university or medical school, your family may be required to pay for certain processing fees. Private companies, such as Science Care, cover all donation related costs and also deliver your unused cremated remains to your family. Science Care supplies donated cadavers to hospitals and pharmaceutical companies.

Cosmetic Uses

Your body (or parts of it) can end up at a medical conference where surgeons will sharpen their skills on you. In "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers," author Mary Roach describes observing a facial anatomy and face lift refresher course for plastic surgeons. The room was set up with folding tables where 40 roasting pans were placed. Each roasting pan contained a human head. Attending surgeons paid $500 a piece to practice face lifts on the heads, which had also recently received nose jobs at another conference.

Forensics

Your body could be used to further the study of human decay. By analyzing the chemical and biological phases a body goes through when it decays, forensic specialists can get a better idea of the time and manner of death. Impact Studies

Cadavers are also used to test the effectiveness of a variety of safety equipment. Your body could be used in experiments designed to discover how much force the human body can withstand before substantial injury. These types of grisly experiments have led to the saving of thousands of lives.

Donor's Rights

The control that you or your family will have over your donated remains is minimal. If you have objections to your body being used in certain ways, you should make it clear on your donor form or include an attached note. It's important to ask the university, school or private company receiving your body if your requests will be honored. A customer representative at Science Care stated that although they "try to accommodate" a donor's requests, there is no guarantee that they'll be able to.

Fishing

Maine has laws and rules for game hunting, trapping and fishing. The laws are enforced by the State of Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Anyone who hunts, traps or fishes must obtain a license. Complimentary licenses are given to certain groups including disabled veterans, military personnel, Native Americans, people over 70 and some handicapped persons.

Laws for Fishing

Maine fishing laws are grouped by ice, open water, saltwater and Atlantic salmon fishing. While ice fishing, you may not lure fish with meat, bones or other food. You can only ice fish on those inland waters that are open by law. If you like to ice fish with multiple lines, you can use a maximum of five. For open water fishing, it's also unlawful to lure fish, but you can place food in a trap that's used to catch baitfish. If your family enjoys alewives, you can take a bushel per day from inland waters, except where someone has been given exclusive rights to the alewives. Different saltwater laws apply to different types of finfish, including methods of catching (for example, hook and line, net) and season and size limitations. Maine has separate rules governing salmon fishing. In determining salmon fishing laws, the IFW's mission is to protect and conserve the salmon. You should check the IFW website for updates on salmon and other fishing laws.

Laws for Hunting Game

In Maine, the hunting laws combine hunter's rights and concern for the environment. If you wound or kill an animal or bird, you must make a reasonable effort to retrieve it and use it for consumption before abandoning it. No one can try to stop you from hunting as long as you're following the law and aren't hunting on that person's property without his or her permission. If you use a hunting dog, you must obtain a license to allow your dog to track wounded deer, moose, and bear, and there are specific times that you can train your dogs on certain animals such as foxes, rabbits, and bears. When hunting with a crossbow, be aware it must have a shoulder-type stock; hand-held crossbows are not allowed. As a crossbow hunter, you may carry a handgun, but you can't use it to shoot a deer. One other law to be aware of: in Maine, it's illegal to hunt on Sunday.

Laws for Trapping Game

Before receiving your trapping license, you must show proof that you've completed a state-approved trapper education course. The animals you may trap during the season are beaver, bobcat, coyote, fisher, fox, marten, mink, muskrat, opossum, otter, raccoon, red squirrel, skunk and weasel. Bear trapping has its own set of rules. No one may take or disturb a wild animal that you've trapped without your permission. If someone is convicted of disturbing a trap, he can be fined and sentenced to jail and he'll also lose his trapping, hunting and fishing privileges for a designated period of time. You may not trap wild animals or birds on any officially designated wildlife sanctuary or posted wildlife management area. Specifically, it's unlawful to trap waterfowl on Haley Pond in the towns of Rangeley and Dallas Plantation in Franklin County.

Care For An Agama Lizard

Agama Lizards are active during the day and enjoy low humidity and sunshine (or UVB lighting). Indigenous to Africa, these relatively tame lizards prefer a semi-dry environment. Caring for an Agama Lizard is easy as long as you can provide them with basic necessities.

Instructions

1. Provide your Agama Lizard with a 48" x 18" x 18" container. Adults can grow quite large and tend to be active.

2. Know that Agamas will be tame if you handle them often. However, they are territorial around other males-keep males separate.

3. Care for an Agama Lizard by providing it with UVB lighting(full spectrum 5% lighting) at least 8 to 10 hours per day. You also should provide a cooler or shaded area.

4. When you create the lizard's enviroment, provide climbing areas made out of rocks and use logs for basking areas. Build hiding places out of rocks or cork bark.

5. Keep temperatures during the day at around 90 degrees Fahrenheit in basking areas, and around 80 degrees Fahrenheit in cool or shaded areas.

6. Maintain night temperatures around 74 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. For 24-hour ground heat, use a reptile heating mat.

7. Keep small amounts of water in a dish inside the Agama's tank. Mist the inside of the tank with water weekly.

8. Know that Agama Lizards like to eat insects. Provide them with a variety of food for proper nutrition, including locusts, crickets, mealworms and waxworms.

9. Include a vitamin supplement and sprinkle calcium on the Agama's meals to ensure proper nutrition.

Some states offer some restricted access to adoption records. This is seen as a compromise between closed and open adoptions. Massachusetts is one state that allows adopted people to have some access to their adoption records. Records are available for the adoptee and the birth parents.

Open Adoption

In Massachusetts, birth parents may be allowed to see and contact an adopted child if all parties agree on the arrangement. All records for the child are available to the birth parents and the adopted family under this agreement. This relationship must be approved by the adopted family and the birth family. The relationship is strictly enforced by the terms of the agreement both parties set up. Any violation of an open adoption's rules results in legal action by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. If this relationship is not instituted at the time of adoption, birth parents are not given contact to the adopted child or adopted family.

18 and Under

When an adoptee is under the age of 18, the adopted parents have access to some information pertaining to the birth parents. The information available about birth parent varies, but can include the age of the biological parents' at the adoption and if they are deceased. The adopted parents are never given the birth parents' names or current address. When an adopted child reaches the age of 18, they may also have access to this information. The adoptee must formally request this information be released. The paperwork to begin this process must be filed in the municipality where the adopted person was born.

21 and Older

The state law changes when the adopted child is 21 years of age. When an adopted person is over 21, she may access identifying information about the birth parents. The current location of the birth parents is not given. At this point, the adopted person's birth parents can request certain information about their child when she turns 21. A written request by the birth parents allows the birth parents to know the name, but not location, of their 21-year-old child.

Access to Original Birth Certificates

In 2007, a law passed in Massachusetts allowing adopted people born on or before July 17, 1974 to access their original birth certificate. This law also allows adopted parents to access the original birth certificate of an adopted child born after January 1, 2008, until the adopted child reaches the age of 18.

Killing endangered animals puts species at risk for extinction and has the potential to trigger environmental disasters. In their 2005 publication "Why Save Endangered Species?," the U.S. Forest Service reported that human activity causes most contemporary animal extinctions, from industrialization that destroys habitats to exterminating species through excessive hunting. Time magazine reported on their website in October 2009 that global warming caused by humans could cause mass extinctions, noting that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found a three to five degree temperature increase worldwide could threaten 30 percent of Earth's species.

Criminal Penalties

Under Section 11 of America's Endangered Species Act, anyone who kills an endangered animal is subject to fines and prison time. These provisions also apply to people who traffic in animal products garnered from killing endangered species. Poachers who kill endangered animals in Africa face harsh sentencing, and in some nations such as South Africa, military personnel patrol wildlife preserves, ready to use lethal force against poachers.

Domino Effects

Ecosystems maintain a fragile balance, with inter-dependencies between all the species within a habitat. When people kill endangered animals, they remove a predator or prey animal that's necessary to maintain this balance. The U.S. Forest Service notes that while it's impossible to gauge the damage an animal's extinction will cause its ecosystem before the actual event, it typically triggers a chain reaction threatening the habitat's other species. Keystone species are plants and animals whose presence in an ecosystem is vital for the system's survival, and killing animals within a keystone species can irrevocably harm or destroy their habitat.

Environmental Indicators

Killing endangered animals can cause fluctuations in the population of species that warn humans of environmental hazards. In December 1990, the University of Florida's IFAS Extension published a report by Frank J. Mazzotti of the university's wildlife ecology and conservation department, in which Mazzotti cited the decline of bald eagles as an example, noting that this event warned humans of DDT's toxicity. After DDT was banned in 1972, scientists discovered that it was a potentially lethal carcinogen.

Ethical Considerations

Many people believe that other species have an inherent right to survive and that Earth's wildlife doesn't exist for humanity to indiscriminately exploit. Once an endangered animal becomes extinct, there's no way to replace it. While cloning extinct animals may be possible, it's extremely problematic. Cloned animals often die days after being brought to term. Spanish scientists cloned an extinct Pyrenean ibex only to have it die shortly after birth. It's also not always possible to find a close enough genetic relative of an extinct animal to implant a cloned embryo.

Increased Extinction Risk

Killing endangered animals reduces the available mating population, which leads to inbreeding and the resultant loss of the species' genetic diversity, an event making extinction more likely. Small populations of endangered animals are particularly vulnerable to drastic habitat changes and disease outbreaks, which also increases their risk for extinction.

2. Discourage your children from putting each other down. When you're together and you hear your children insulting or demeaning each other, put a stop to it. Kindness truly does begin at home, and your children have to learn to be kind to one another if they are to carry on the behavior outside the home.

3. Provide opportunities for children to exhibit kindness. Gently nudge your child toward being kind by making suggestions to help others. Avoid forcing the issue, though, because your child won't feel like being kind if you do; she'll feel like you're dominating her decisions instead.

4. Catch children being kind. Be on the lookout for your child pushing his friend on the swing, helping his sister with her homework or opening the door for a senior. Acknowledge and praise his great choices and for taking the opportunity to show others his kindness.

5. Recognize your child's individual gifts and talents. Make the effort to see your child for who she is and don't compare her to her siblings or friends. This will only build resentment. If you praise her for her uniqueness, she'll learn to see it in others and appreciate them in the same way.

6. Realize the value of an apology. Teaching your child to be kind isn't exclusively about all the good stuff. Sometimes, probably more often that you care to admit, it's about knowing when you've made a mistake and saying you're sorry. That will also teach your child compassion and resonsibility.

7. Allow children to take ownership of their own behavior. Just as you tell your child to take responsibility for his own bad choices, you shouldn't take the credit when he is kind to others. You've given her the foundation, but ultimately it's up to him to carry it out. When he does, let him own it.

The Effect Of Neutering On A Dog'S Growth

The ASPCA estimates that, of the 5 to 7 million companion animals that enter animal shelters each year, 3 to 4 million are euthanized. Yet, neutering our pets, particularly dogs, remains a hot-button issue. Some claim that neutered dogs lose their masculinity, become obese, and have drastic personality changes. Another argument is that neutering, particularly if done early, will stunt the animal's growth. While there may be physiological drawbacks to neutering in some cases, stunted growth is simply not one of them.

Traditional Neutering Age

Until recent years, veterinarians recommended neutering or spaying be done when a dog reached 6 to 8 months of age. Many vets still make this recommendation, as it tends to be one they are comfortable with in terms of anesthesia and surgical practices.

Newer Guidelines

Other vets, especially in light of pet overpopulation, are now recommending and performing neuter surgeries on younger animals, with the idea being that the surgery be performed before the dog reaches sexual maturity. Although it varies somewhat by breed, dogs become capable of fathering pups well before 6 months of age. Neuters are being performed, particularly on shelter animals, as early as 7 weeks after birth, just before the dog becomes 2 months old.

Effect on Growth

Reproductive hormones---testosterone and estrogen---play a certain role in canine bone development. Prior to sexual maturity, the growth plates at the ends of immature bones are loosely attached. Once sexually mature, the dog's body releases reproductive hormones, which cause those plates to fuse to the bones. What this means is that a dog neutered prior to sexual maturity---earlier than 4 months or so---actually tends to be slightly larger than one neutered after reaching sexual maturity. The differences are within fractions of inches, but they do exist, as the growth plates fuse to the bones later than in an intact animal. A dog neutered after reaching sexual maturity suffers no loss of growth due to the neutering. It reaches the same potential size it would had it remained intact.

Benefits of Neutering

Aside from removing your pet's ability to contribute to the dearth of unwanted pets, neutering has health and behavioral benefits for your dog. A neutered animal is less likely to roam, hump, mark territory or be inappropriately aggressive than an intact dog. At the same time, no evidence supports the notion that a neutered animal is more likely to gain weight than an intact one, nor does it lose its natural tendencies to be appropriately protective of its territory and family. In a study cited by Ruth Marrion, DVM, neutered dogs were found to be more active than their sexually intact companions.

Physiologically, spaying and neutering can reduce the risks of certain kinds of cancers and other diseases in dogs. Most notably, ovarian and testicular cancers are nonexistent in animals who are lacking these particular organs. Females are also less likely to develop mammary tumors, which is the most common kind of tumor found in intact bitches.

Potential Drawbacks of Early Neutering

Because the practice is relatively new, and because there are no set rules in veterinary medicine as to when castration surgery should be performed, there may be potential drawbacks to early neutering. Avoidance of these relies mainly on the surgeon's skill and experience, as well as the individual dog's physiology.

A commonly cited problem in spaying a young female is that she may develop urinary incontinence. This may happen if the muscles of her urinary sphincter are damaged, underdeveloped, or if the nerves in that region are compromised due to the surgery. This may be particularly true for very small breeds.

Chris Zink DVM, PhD, DACVP, states that females who are spayed early are more likely to develop vascular or bone cancers, and that there is evidence that they may develop endocrine disorders later in life. Males who are neutered early may have more incidence of bone cancer. In the case of both genders, Dr. Zink also reports a higher incidence of hip dysplasia in dogs who are neutered prior to sexual maturity.
